Situated in the Middle East, the Republic of Yemen, often just called Yemen, is on the south west coast of the Arabian Peninsula and has borders with Saudi Arabia and Oman. The people of Yemen are generally very friendly and welcoming plus the country has a good selection of tourist attractions, however, due to current instability, terrorist activity and kidnappings, travel to Yemen is not advised.

Republic of Yemen Tourist Attractions

It is such a shame that Yemen is experiencing problems right now as the country certainly has a lot to offer in terms of tourism. There are four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Yemen, added to the register for differing reasons…

The Old City of Sana’a

The capital of the Republic of Yemen is Sana’a (often simplified to Sanaa). As the location of the country’s international airport flights to Republic of Yemen will arrive here and hence this is the main entry point for foreign visitors.

The ancient Old City of Sana’a has been a World Heritage Site since 1986 and has been inhabited for over 2,500 years. The Old City features a very impressive array of historic buildings dating from the 11th century including 103 mosques, over 6,000 houses, and 14 hammams (bath houses). One mosque, the Great Mosque, dates as far back as the 7th century and is one of the oldest in the Muslim world.

The Old Walled City of Shibam

Republic of Yemen’s first addition to the World Heritage List was the Old Walled City of Shibam. This impressive city is nicknamed Manhattan of the Desert because of the large number of tall buildings. Shibam was built in the 16th century making this one of the oldest of its kind in terms of urban planning – constructing buildings that went upwards rather than outwards.

Historic Town of Zabid

Since 1993 the Historic Town of Zabid has been protected as a World Heritage Site. The town actually served as Yemen’s capital between the 13th and 15th centuries and was an important centre for the Arab and Islamic world due to its university where it is said that Algebra was invented in the 9th century. The town is part of what is now called Aden.

The Socotra Archipelago

The final and most recent Republic of Yemen addition to the World Heritage list is the Socotra Archipelago. In addition to the mainland, Yemen’s territory includes over one hundred small islands of which this archipelago is part of. The archipelago was inscribed due to its rich biodiversity including plants and animals, and because of its cultural heritage that includes the unique Soqotri language.

When Should You Visit the Republic of Yemen?

Yemen has a variable climate affected by the sea and its mountains. In general the east of Yemen is known for being very hot and dry, while the Red Sea Coast (in the west) is known for being hot and humid. In the mountains the temperatures will be cooler and in the western mountains in particular there is a more temperate climate and it is affected by seasonal monsoons.
