Hamilton is the capital, and only city, of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda. Situated in the Sargasso Sea of the Atlantic Ocean, Hamilton is Bermuda’s major port and is located within a naturally sheltered part of the Main Island of Bermuda. Hamilton has a variety of old and new attractions for visitors to enjoy.

Flights to Hamilton land at the Bermuda International Airport (airport code: BDA) which is well linked to Hamilton by road. Visitors to Hamilton will need to fly indirect flights with at least one stop from the UK. Choose from airlines such as Air Canada, Continental Airlines, Virgin Delta Air Lines, Atlantic Airways, and British Airways who provide flights to Hamilton from the UK with one connection. There are a variety of routes available for these flights to Hamilton, and these vary with the airlines.

The Tourist Attractions of Hamilton

Hamilton is a sizeable city with a large range of facilities and services, plus a variety of tourist attractions too. Though not by any means the oldest settlement on Bermuda, Hamilton was established in 1790. When it became the capital in 1815 a period of development was begun, resulting in ridding the city of some of its oldest buildings. Visitors looking for colonial architecture will find some here in Hamilton, though in fact the town of Saint George (which coincidentally is larger than Hamilton) is the better location to enjoy these.

Royal Navy Dockyard

Accessible via a short ferry ride from Hamilton is one of Bermuda’s top tourist attractions, the Royal Navy Dockyard. This was built in 1795 and used right up until 1958. It was the main base for the Royal Navy in this part of the Atlantic for many years. Having feel into disrepair the base has been redeveloped and offers a variety of attractions including buildings which have been converted into restaurants and shops, a Children’s Museum, the Bermuda Maritime Museum, and of course the chance to explore some of the original military structures and underground chambers.

Parks in Hamilton

For a city of its size, Hamilton has a large amount of open space and parkland, the most notable of which is Victoria Park, named after Queen Victoria. Others include Barr’s Park and Par La Ville Park, all of which make for a pleasant stroll or somewhere to relax in the shade of trees and plants.

Hamilton Architecture

Hamilton has a number of interesting buildings including the imposing Anglican Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, which looks somewhat out of place here, and the Cathedral of St Theresa. There’s also the pink walled Bermuda Customs House, and the more modern City Hall of Hamilton which was completed in 1960.

Other Attractions in Hamilton

Hamilton’s museums include the Bermuda Historical Society Museum, and the Bermuda National Gallery. The Bermuda Farmers Market is a popular attraction, and in addition to the above landmarks, other Hamilton landmarks include the Cabinet Building and Cenotaph, the Law Courts, Sessions House, Bermudiana Arcade, and Canon’s Court. Of course there are also some excellent beaches in the vicinity of Hamilton to enjoy too.

When Should You Visit Hamilton?

Hamilton enjoys a subtropical climate which sees little variation in the average temperature across the year. August is the hottest month with an average high of 30C (85.5F), whilst the coolest month is February, though temperatures still average at a high of 20C (68F). Winters therefore are very mild, but with the potential threat of winter storms, spring through autumn is usually the best time to visit.
