Sometimes mistakenly called St George’s after the parish it’s within, the town of Saint George is located in Bermuda on St George’s Island. A holiday to Saint George combines the great weather and beaches of Bermuda with culture and history, as Saint George is the oldest continually inhabited English settlement in the New World.

Flights to Saint George

There is only one international airport in Bermuda, which is the L.F. Wade International Airport (formerly called the Bermuda International Airport) (airport code: BDA), and this is good for flight to Saint George. The airport is quite close to the town and there are taxis and public bus service into the city, though buses will not allow much luggage. There are no rental cars on the island. British Airways offers a direct flight to Saint George from London Gatwick, otherwise you’ll need a connection in the USA or Canada with airlines such as Air Canada, via Toronto, American Airlines via New York, or Delta Airlines via Atlanta.

Saint George Tourist Attractions

Aside from the fact that your main reason for visiting Bermuda will likely be to have a holiday in the sun, a visit to Saint George offers much more than just lazy days on the beach!

Founded in 1612 as New London, Saint George is a historic town that still retains much of its old architecture, giving it a very English yet Bermudan feel. Saint George was the original capital of Bermuda but the fact that the government moved to Hamilton was a blessing in disguise as it meant the streets and buildings of Saint George remained relatively untouched for hundreds of years. There are so many heritage buildings here that in fact the town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, which includes the historic town and its related fortifications. Among the landmarks you can see today are the following:

King’s Square

King’s Square was the main square of Saint George and it’s still a vibrant place to this day. During the peak season there are town criers and actors moving around in period dress and interacting with the tourists, so it can be a lot of fun here! Surrounding the square you have the Town Hall and you can explore the little side streets and alleys that make their way around the town. Many of these still have their original names such as Old Maid’s Lane, and Needle and Thread Alley. These names were usually significant to what trades and businesses were located down them.

The visitors centre is also located on King’s Square. You should definitely pop inside to pick up some maps and information about Saint George including a very good self guided walking tour that takes you around all the main sights of the town.

St Peter’s Church

The quaint and attractive St Peter’s Church is the oldest surviving Anglican church in continuous use outside the British Isles. This isn’t quite the original church as the first, that was immediately built upon establishing Saint George, was made out of wood and a thatched roof but didn’t take long before it was destroyed, The oldest parts of this structure still date right back to 1620 though. An old cedar tree in the grounds was at first used as the belfry. The church bell was hung here because there was not a bell tower originally to keep it in! Saint George has many other historic buildings, forts, museums and more to see.

When Should You Visit Saint George?

Saint George has a humid subtropical climate and stays warm all year round. Rainfall should be expected whenever you visit and average high temperatures of between 20C in the winter and 30C in the summer. Be aware that Saint George is susceptible to hurricanes.
