Calgary is the largest city in the Canadian province of Alberta where it sits between the prairies and the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Calgary is probably most famous for being the home of the Calgary Stampede though the city has more to offer than this!

From the UK, flights to Calgary International Airport (airport code: YYC) are available with numerous airlines, most with one connecting flight. Direct and daily flights from the UK are offered from London to Calgary by British Airways. BMI provides non-stop travel from the UK to Calgary, as does Air Canada. Flights to Calgary from the UK are also provided by Lufthansa, Continental Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines, KLM and Northwest Airlines. All these flights offer one connection via their home country. For example, Lufthansa will fly from London via Frankfurt and United Airlines via Denver or Chicago.

The Tourist Attractions of Calgary

Calgary is a popular tourist destination, most frequently visited for one of two reasons – the Calgary Stampede, and as the gateway to the Rockies. Many visitors coming to Canada from abroad will use Calgary as their main gateway as this (along with Edmonton) is one of the major cities which is situated close to places like Banff. This means that some visitors will by-pass seeing the city of Calgary and head straight for the Rockies, though this really shouldn’t be the case as this is an attractive city with a number of attractions.

The Calgary Stampede

The Stampede, known as the Greatest Show on Earth, is held every year in July and takes place over ten days. It’s the world’s largest outdoor rodeo, though it attracts more than just the local cowboys! Usually around 1 million people attend over the ten days to watch a variety of rodeo competitions, and though many visitors will likely have little or no interest in most rodeos, the majority of visitors come to the Calgary Stampede just to experience the atmosphere and to say that they have been to the greatest show on earth!

Other Calgary Attractions

In addition to the Stampede, Calgary has a number of outdoor attractions for visitors to enjoy. What surprises some visitors is just how clean Calgary is – the city was in fact ranked the world’s cleanest city by a 2007 survey!

Within a few minutes walk of the city centre you come to Prince’s Island Park. This is a large inner city park which has a backdrop of the city’s skyscrapers yet feels like you could be anywhere but the centre of a large city!

The Calgary Zoo is a world-class zoo with over 1000 animals and is the second largest zoo in Canada.

The Glenbow Museum is the largest museum in Western Canada and has some great displays and exhibits contained in over 20 galleries, whilst Fort Calgary Historic Park shows you what this area was like before the city was built. This was the home of Fort Calgary, a fort built in 1875 for the Northwest Mounted Police.

A little way outside the city centre is the Canada Olympic Park where the 1988 Winter Olympics took place. A tour of the site is recommended, especially going to the top of the ski jump for some great views!

If it’s great views you want then the Calgary Tower is the best place to go! This isn’t exactly a huge tower but on a clear day the views out to the Rockies are spectacular and the glass floor is fun too!

When Should You Visit Calgary?

Calgary experiences warm to hot summers with many predominantly sunny days, making July and August great months to visit. Winters can be milder than in many parts of Canada and Calgary is particularly affected by the Chinooks. These are warm winds which come from the west and depending on their path the city’s temperature can plummet one hour and soar the next. So winters can be a little unpredictable!
