Cranbrook is a beautiful little city in the province of British Columbia in western Canada. Nestled between many mountains Cranbrook certainly has plenty of scenic beauty to attract tourists and a number of specific tourist attractions to visit too.

Flights to Cranbrook

Outside of Cranbrook is the Canadian Rockies International Airport (airport code: YXC). There is no bus service into town, but there are taxis, rental cars and shuttle services. You can get a flight to Cranbrook from the UK with Air Canada, and have one transfer in Calgary. British Airways also has a 1-stop route, but through Vancouver. United Airlines stops twice, in Chicago and Calgary. However, these last two flights to Cranbrook take almost twice as long as the Air Canada route, because connection times don’t match up as well.

Cranbrook Tourist Attractions

The city of Cranbrook is the main centre for the Kootenays region, a region of southern British Columbia famous for its spectacular scenery. This isn’t quite the Rockies, but you can see sections of the Rocky Mountains from Cranbrook and you have access to some of the world’s most beautiful scenery right on the doorstep of Cranbrook.

This is definitely a location that will appeal to those who love the great outdoors. The scenery is so abundant that it’s easy to become blasé after a few days of staying here! It’s a dream location for both amateur and professional photographers as there’s so much to photograph, and plenty of wildlife to look out for too. Elizabeth Lake for example is a popular spot as this is a nature reserve.

Canadian Museum of Rail Travel

Whether or not you’re into trains Cranbrook’s Canadian Museum of Rail Travel makes an interesting visit for the whole family. The museum consists of several buildings including historical buildings such as the Royal Alexandra Hall where you can re-live the glory days of the great Canadian railways. Meanwhile the exterior trains display is a look back at trains from history spanning the years 1887 to 1955.

Fort Steele Heritage Town

If history interests you take a drive a short distance outside of Cranbrook to the Fort Steele Heritage Town. Here you’ll find the remains of a once booming town and be able to experience what life was like here in the 1800s. There are demonstrations, wagon tours, train rides, and fun family shows that take place at the Wild Horse Theatre, plus there are interpretive displays where you can find out more.

You can also look out for some of the historical buildings within Cranbrook itself as there are still some remnants from the days when Cranbrook was first established in 1898.

When Should You Visit Cranbrook?

Cranbrook has a certain appeal at any time of the year as it’s often heralded as British Columbia’s sunniest city! There’s an average of over 2200 hours of sunshine per year and in the middle of summer daytime highs can get up around 35C, making this a surprisingly warm city. Winters are cold in contrast but with the sunny weather it can feel pleasant even when the temperature’s -10C (the average low in January)!
