Edmonton is the capital city of the province of Alberta in Canada. It’s the second largest city in the province, after Calgary, and has numerous attractions including the famous West Edmonton Mall.

For flights to Edmonton, the Edmonton International Airport (airport code: YEG) is very convenient, and located close to the city. It’s only 6 miles (10km) from downtown, with regular shuttle service. Though close to the city centre, there are no public transit routes to the airport (use the airport shuttle instead). There is a non-stop service for flights to Edmonton from London’s Heathrow Airport, and this is the only option for a direct route. British Airways and British Midland both have routes with a transfer in Calgary, or a connection in Chicago is the other choice with US Airways or Continental Airlines.

Edmonton Tourist Attractions

Edmonton is a large city, in terms of both its land area and the number of people living here. To make the most of everything the city has to offer a car is probably a good idea, even though public transport is good and affordable here. There are several districts to the city, each with their own attractions. Here are just some of the highlights of a visit to Edmonton…

West Edmonton Mall

Edmonton’s most famous attraction is the huge shopping mall, West Edmonton Mall. For 23 years it held the title as the world’s largest shopping mall and though it no longer holds that title it is still the largest in North America. Shopaholics could spend their entire holiday in here, enjoying the 800+ shops and services that also include a theme park named Galaxyland; the world’s largest indoor water park; an indoor lake with sea lions; an ice rink; adventure golf; a cinema; a recreation centre that includes bowling and a live music venue; plus even more!

Fort Edmonton Park

Another top attraction in the city is the Fort Edmonton Park. This is the largest living history museum in Canada and it includes original historical structures in addition to reconstructed ones. Costumed staff help to recreate the four themed areas of the park which include an 1846 Fort, an 1885 Street, a 1905 Street, and a 1920 Street. The park is easily a day’s visit if you want to get a really good feel for period life, and is informative as well as being fun and interesting.

Alberta Legislature

The Alberta Legislature is a very impressive building, reminiscent of the design commonly used for US state capitol buildings. Tours are available of the building, which was constructed in 1911, and the interior is particularly noted for its art.

Art Gallery of Alberta

Speaking of art, the Art Gallery of Alberta (formerly the Edmonton Art Gallery) is a popular visit for tourists interested in art, with over 5000 pieces, and always unique exhibitions.

Other Attractions in Edmonton

Amongst Edmonton’s other popular attractions is the Muttart Conservatory which consists of four glass pyramids, and is a Eden Project-esque attraction with three climatic zones of plants. Also the Royal Alberta Museum displays Alberta’s history, while the Telus World of Science is a science museum with planetarium and IMAX cinema.

When Should You Visit Edmonton?

The continental climate experienced in Edmonton means there will always be extremes of temperature from summer to winter. Visitors not used to the cold probably shouldn’t arrange a trip during the winter, as the average high daily temperature in January is well below freezing at -7.3 C (19F). Summers can be lovely though, with warm temperatures in the low 20’s C (low 70’s F). This is one of Canada’s sunniest cities.
