Historic Garrison District
Tourists interested in history will enjoy a visit to Fredericton as there are a number of historical buildings and attractions in the city. The Historic Garrison District is in the downtown area of Fredericton and features a cluster of historical attractions. You can see buildings such as the Soldiers Barracks, and the Guard House and see the changing of the guard. There are museums here too including the York Sunbury Historical Society Museum, plus attractive shops and craft shops where you buy some lovely local items from.
Old Government House
Situated on a road with many other similar houses is Fredericton’s Old Government House. This position is slightly strange as you would usually expect a house of this importance to stand on its own. Old Government House was built between 1826 ad 1828 and was a location for balls and official state events. Today is the Canadian Royal Family are visiting Fredericton they will stay here, and since 1996 it has been open to the public so you can come along for a free guided tour.
The Beaverbrook Art Gallery
The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is Fredericton’s top art gallery and although the building itself is relatively small the gallery contains an impressive and renowned collection of art. Pieces include works by Dali, Turner, Constable, and Gainsborough. There is also a collection of 19th and 20th century Canadian artists.
When Should You Visit Fredericton?
Fredericton has a humid continental climate making it warmer than many other Canadian cities, the only downside to this is that Fredericton is a fairly wet city so you should come prepared for precipitation whatever time of year you visit. Summers are most popular for sightseeing and temperatures are warm with an average high of 25.6C (78F) in July. There’s usually snowfall from November through to April and winters though mild in comparison will probably be colder than you’re used to. The average high in January for example is just -4C (25F). Snow usually stays on the ground from December and if you do visit during the winter you can enjoy the outdoor skating rink in the city centre.
