Destinations in Canada
Grand Prairie is a city in the north west of the province of Alberta, in Canada. It’s a relatively small city with a population of around 50,000 people, yet it’s one of the fastest growing cities in Canada. For the tourist there are some attractions though this probably isn’t somewhere you’d spend your entire holiday.
Flights to Grand Prairie
Just west of the city is the Grand Prairie Airport (airport code: YQU), that handles domestic flights to Grand Prairie. It's not far from the city but there are no public transit options for traveller access, so you'll need a taxi or a rental car. The only airline to have a 1-stop flight to Grand Prairie from the UK is Air Canada, and that route transfers in Calgary. British Airways also has a flight to Grand Prairie that connects in Toronto and Edmonton.
Grand Prairie Tourist Attractions
Grand Prairie is the largest city in between Edmonton and Fairbanks in Alaska so it’s got just about everything that residents should need on a day to day basis. It isn’t really considered to be a tourist destination though, especially for visitors from overseas when there are cities like Edmonton and Calgary to explore further south in Alberta. All the same, Grand Prairie is a nice city and somewhere that you could spend a little time in.
You could use Grand Prairie as a base for exploring some of the wilderness that Canada is so well known for. There are many places around the city and the surrounding area where you can get out and enjoy hiking and wildlife watching during the summer, and an abundance of winter sports during the winter. Cross country skiing and snowmobiling are particularly popular sports to enjoy in the winter, plus there’s a local ski hill called Nitehawk. Obviously you can go skiing here but Nitehawk is also famous for having the only natural luge track in North America.
During the summer, as well as the hiking opportunities you can enjoy golfing and experience some of the city’s culture. Summer long music festivals are a regular occurrence for example. In terms of golf there are three 18-hole golf courses in the area and a few 9-hole golf courses too, and the great thing is that you can play until late during the summer because of the late sunset due to Grand Prairie being situated so far north.
You don’t have to go too far to enjoy walking and wildlife as Grand Prairie has a number of parks and open spaces within the city limits including Muskoseepi Park which has bike trails, an outdoor swimming pool, and a pond that becomes a skating rink in the winter. Crystal Lake is another destination. It has parkland and preserved wetlands which are great for birdwatching , as well as walking and cycling paths.
When Should You Visit Grand Prairie?
The best times to visit Grand Prairie depend on what you’re planning to do when you get here. Obviously those winter sports are best enjoyed when the snow is thick so this could be from December through to March. Be prepared for cold temperatures though – the average high in January is -9.5C (15F) and average low is -20.5C (-5F). In the summer temperatures are mild, peaking in July with an average high of 22C (72F).
