Situated in North America, Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia. Being such a huge country there are countless tourist attractions across the whole of Canada to enjoy, and unless you were spending months, or even years here you could only just begin to experience them all!

Canada is served by three major international airports: Toronto (airport code: YYZ), Montreal (airport code: YUL) and Vancouver (airport code: YVR). Flights to Canada from the UK are available through numerous airlines with direct and indirect routes. Air Canada and BMI offer travellers direct flights to Canada’s three major airports from the UK. One stop flights to Canada from the UK are also offered by airlines such as Northwest Airlines, United Airlines, Continental Airlines, US Airways, and KLM. There are also a couple of charter airlines who offer flights to Canada from the UK, including Air Transat and Thomas Cook Airlines.

Although there are numerous other airports in Canada, the above three are the main gateways. Some airlines also offer direct flights to Canada’s other airports, including Calgary, Edmonton, and Ottawa, or you can travel to Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver and then get a connecting flight to other Canadian cities.

The Tourist Attractions of Canada

Because Canada is so large it would be impossible to list all of the attractions, so you’ll find below a summary of the main attractions near the three major airports…

Toronto

Toronto is Canada’s largest city and the main gateway for visitors coming into the province of Ontario. The city of Toronto is a multi-cultural city with numerous attractions, though one of the most popular is the CN Tower, the tallest tower in Canada and for many years the tallest in the world.

Around the shore of Lake Ontario from Toronto is the world-famous Niagara Falls, whilst to the north east of Toronto is the capital of Canada, Ottawa. Ottawa is a far smaller city and its attractions include the Parliament Buildings and the Rideau Canal.

Montreal

North of Ottawa you come into the province of Quebec. In Quebec many people use French as their first language, although English is also widely spoken too. Montreal is the major gateway to Quebec, and the liveliest city in Canada! Its Old City is the top tourist attraction here, including famous buildings like the Basilique Notre-Dame. Further north east of Montreal is the province’s capital city, Quebec City, which is also well known for its historical architecture.

Vancouver

Over in the far west of the Canadian mainland is the city of Vancouver. Vancouver is known for its mild climate, as it is on average far milder here than in the rest of Canada. Vancouver itself has many attractions, such as the huge Stanley Park, Grouse Mountain, Granville Island, and the second largest Chinatown in North America.

Across the Strait of Georgia from Vancouver is Vancouver Island, where in the far south of the island is the popular city of Victoria. Victoria is even milder than Vancouver and the city, plus the whole of Vancouver Island has many attractions too.

A little inland from Vancouver and to the north, is the famous ski resort of Whistler, whilst much further inland you will eventually come to the famous Canadian Rocky Mountains where many of the country’s national parks is situated – Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise and the most spectacular scenery can be found here, though if you’re only visiting the Rockies you would be better off landing in the closer city of Calgary.

When Should You Visit Canada?

When you should visit really depends on what you want to do here, as Canada is an a great choice year-round. Winters are cold and snowy, especially away from the east and west coasts, but if you enjoy skiing there are some fantastic ski resorts to visit across the country.

Perhaps surprising to some visitors is the fact that summers can get really very hot in Canada. The interior of the province of British Columbia (in the west) usually reaches into the 30’s C during the summer, whilst other parts of Canada are very pleasant and warm.
