Flights to Kamloops

The Kamloops Airport (airport code: YKA) is fairly small but handles several international airlines for flights to Kamloops. There is a public bus service to the airport, as well as rental cars and taxis to take you on the short drive into the city centre. You won’t find direct flights to Kamloops from the UK, but there are several options. The main determining factor is that you connect with a flight from either Calgary or Vancouver and you can do this best on a 1-stop flight to Kamloops with Air Canada, via Calgary. Other options include United Airlines and Continental both with two stopovers, in Chicago and Vancouver. British Airways also has a flight to Kamloops that goes through Toronto and Vancouver. Alternatively you can catch a flight to Calgary or Vancouver with Thomas Cook Airlines or Air Transat, then change to an Air Canada Jazz airplane to take you on the onward flight to Kamloops. This may involve a longer wait depending on arrival and departure times.

Kamloops Tourist Attractions

For a city of its size Kamloops attracts more tourists than you might expect, but there are a couple of good reasons for this. Kamloops is at the junction of several major roads, so if you were travelling to the Rockies from Vancouver or vice versa, you could pass through here. It’s also a stopping point for the famous Rocky Mountaineer trains, so Kamloops has plenty of hotels and motels to accommodate all this passing trade. Though not bursting with tourist attractions you’ll find Kamloops does have a number of places to visit, and it’s surrounded by many lakes, forests and mountains where you can enjoy outdoor life to the full.

BC Wildlife Park

One of the city’s top attractions is the BC Wildlife Park, situated about 15 minutes drive from the city centre. With the focus on wildlife of British Columbia you’ll be able to see a pair of old grizzly bears, plus many other species including grey wolves, coyotes, cougars, bison, elk and moose, to name just a few. There are also birds of prey here and you can find out lots about them in the daily show.

Kamloops Heritage Railway

Through the summer, and on special days throughout the year, the Kamloops Heritage Railway runs, and is a popular attraction with both locals and visitors. You can ride the rails on an old authentic steam train, and even be held up by outlaws!

Sun Peaks

About an hour’s drive from Kamloops is one of BC’s premier ski resorts. During the winter the resort is full of skiers and snowboarders, plus you can enjoy skating, cross country skiing, sleigh rides and more. Sun Peaks is very popular during the summer too as the ski lifts operate in the summer months to take hikers and bikers up the mountain. The mountain bike park is popular with all ages and has varying levels of difficulty.
