The Tourist Attractions of Montreal

Compared to Canada’s other major cities, Montreal is really very European and it’s easy to see the French influence shining through in many ways. The architecture of the Old City of Montreal is a really good example of this, and this in fact is what many visitors come to Montreal to see.

Dating from the 17th to the 19th century, the buildings of the Old City of Montreal are very European. The most famous, and most impressive, building in the city is the Basilique Notre-Dame perched high on a hilltop in the old city. This beautiful building is styled in the Victorian Gothic style of architecture, which Montreal is so famous for.

Although this is the main attraction of the old city, visitors enjoying soaking up the European atmosphere found here. You can walk down cobbled streets, window shop in boutique stores, or enjoy an excellent French meal. Place Jacques-Cartier is one of the top streets for doing this!

The beauty of the Old City is that it’s not too large so can be enjoyed on foot, or for a real sense of the old-world you can take a ride on a horse-drawn carriage!

The museums of the Old City should not be missed either. There are several here, including the Montreal History Centre, the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel, and one set inside the oldest stone church in Montreal called Marguerite-Bourgeoys Museum.

The final area of the Old City you should also take time to see is the Old Port. Here the riverfront is an attractive open space where people enjoy relaxing on a summer’s day. Attractions also include the Clock Tower, Cirque du Soleil and the Labyrinth.

Montreal isn’t all about history though; this is a very modern and cosmopolitan city too which is reflected in Downtown Montreal. The city is famous for its Underground City where you’ll find miles of passageways linking together shopping malls, food courts, cinemas and more. During the winter this is a godsend to the people of Montreal as it means they don’t have to come out into the cold to move from shop to shop.

Another major attraction here is Mary Queen of the World Cathedral. This is a ¼ size copy of the famous St Peter’s in Rome, and has a fantastic interior definitely worth seeing.

When Should You Visit Montreal?

As mentioned above you can enjoy Montreal’s downtown area during the winter because of the Underground City, and although the Old City is fantastic any time of the year, be aware that it does get cold in Montreal in the winter. Heavy snowfall is common and the average high temperature in January is -5.7C.

Summers are very pleasant and warm though, with an average high in July of 26C. However, be prepared for a rain shower or two in the summer.
