Port Hardy is a small but very popular town that’s situated on the north eastern edge of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, western Canada. Port Hardy is the gateway to one BC’s popular provincial parks, Cape Scott Provincial Park and is a great destination for people who love the outdoors.

Flights to Port Hardy

The small Port Hardy Airport (airport code: YZT) is about 6 miles (10km) outside of town but only handles local flights. When booking an international flight to Port Hardy from the UK you should travel to one of the province’s larger airports such as the larger Victoria International Airport (code: YYJ). This is located at the southern end of Vancouver Island and is about a 6 hour drive away, or you could take a short flight to Port Hardy from here with Pacific Coastal Airlines. For arrivals in Victoria, Air Canada has a 1-stop flight that goes through Calgary, or Continental stops once in San Francisco. Virgin is another option, with connections in New York and Seattle.

Port Hardy Tourist Attractions

For such a small town Port Hardy is a hugely popular place. It sits at the northern end of Vancouver Island and is essentially at the end of the road – Highway 19 runs the course of the eastern edge of the island and ends here in Port Hardy. Being so small you might wonder what’s so great about this place, but Port Hardy has a lot going for it!

Filomi Days

Though tourism is very much the mainstay of the economy in Port Hardy today, the community is happy to remember the important natural resources that helped to shape the town originally. Filomi stands for fishing, logging and mining, and the Filomi Days celebrations take place every year in July in Rotary Park. If you’re visiting at this time of the year go along to the festival to enjoy all sorts of activities and entertainment.

Cape Scott Provincial Park

Port Hardy is best known as the gateway to the large Cape Scott Provincial Park which is located on the north western edge of Vancouver Island. The park is very popular with visitors who love the great outdoors and includes beaches, old growth forest, lakes and more. Hiking is a popular pastime and there are numerous campsites here.

Wildlife Watching in Port Hardy

You’re bound to see some wildlife while visiting Cape Scott Provincial Park, but you’re also quite likely to see wildlife within and around Port Hardy itself too. Deer are seen frequently and black bears are quite common too. Look to the skies for the bald eagle, and look out to the waters for a chance to spot humpback whales swimming off the coast. If you walk along the Quatse Loop Nature Trail you might have a better chance of seeing some wildlife, and if you want to go whale spotting, fishing, or boat touring there are usually numerous boat tours operating out of Port Hardy.

When Should You Visit Port Hardy?

Port Hardy has a mild but wet climate and it’s rainiest is during the winter, particularly from October to March. Summer time average highs are mild but it can get chilly especially at night. August is the warmest month with an average high of 18C (64F) while January is the coldest month with an average high of 5.8C (42F).
