Destinations in Canada
The city of Quebec is often referred to as Quebec City so as to distinguish it from the province of Quebec. It is the capital of this Canadian province and a popular tourist destination for its history and culture.
Flights to Quebec
The airport for Quebec City is the Jean Lesage International Airport (airport code: YQB), and it's about a 20 minute drive out from the downtown centre of the city. There is a public bus route to and from the airport, but it only runs a few times through the day, and hence taxis are a more convenient choice. Continental Airlines and Virgin Atlantic both have 1-stop flights to Quebec City that connects in New York. Air Canada also has flights to Quebec City, transferring once in Montreal.
Quebec City Tourist Attractions
When you arrive in Quebec you may think you’d landed in France rather than Canada! This city speaks almost entirely French and as you walk through the Old Town you may be reminded of chateaus and cafés from Paris and its surrounds.
There’s no doubt that the Old Town of Quebec City is the main tourist attraction, however this city does have a modern side too.
The Old Town
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old Town of Quebec should definitely not be missed. Although the upper parts of the Old Town are now quite touristy this shouldn’t put you off as you can still experience the authentic old city here.
The main landmark in the Old Town, and in fact Quebec City’s most famous landmark, is Chateau Frontenac. This huge hotel was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in the late 19th century and it’s now part of the prestigious Fairmont chain. Staying at the hotel itself can be very expensive but if you’d like to go inside and admire the architecture and the views you can do so.
If the price of a drink inside the Chateau Frontenac is enough to put you off entering, the views from the adjoining Dufferin Terrace are very good too.
The Old Town is held within the City Walls. These are the only fortified city walls to still exist in the Americas north of Mexico. Follow the walls to the Citadel and if you visit at 10am you can see the changing of the guard ceremony.
Outside the City Walls
You don’t have to be in the Old Town to get great views over Quebec as one of the city’s tallest buildings is outside the city walls. The Observatiore de la Capitale offers excellent city views.
One of the city’s top attractions outside of the Old Town is Place Royale. This is a public square and marks the spot where the French first settled in North America in 1608. The square’s buildings do not date from this period as they were built later, but it’s a beautiful spot all the same.
Place Royale is in the Basse-Ville area of Quebec City where you’ll also find the Musee de la Civilization (the Museum of Civilisation). This interesting museum features the history of the city as well as exhibits that focus of many different peoples from around the world.
When Should You Visit Quebec City?
Quebec City is a city that attracts tourists throughout the year, offering something different in each of the seasons. Winters are cold and snowy here yet this is a magical time to visit when you can enjoy events such as the Winter Festival.
Summers on the other hand are warm and humid, so perfect for walking around discovering all the sights of the city.
