Barkerville Historic Town
Cottonwood was on the way to the main town for the Cariboo Gold Rush, Barkerville, which is about 50 miles to the east of Quesnel. Barkerville grew almost overnight and had up to 5,000 residents who had come here to seek their fortune in the gold fields. Despite being such a boom town, Barkerville declined by the end of the 1800s and turned into a ghost town. The town was revived in the 1950s when it was decided it would become a tourist attraction and today you can see the town just as it was in its heyday.
