Saint John Tourist Attractions
The first thing to note about Saint John is the name. There’s another city with a very similar name in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and to distinguish them from one another, the other city is usually said and spelt St John’s.
Saint John in New Brunswick was first established in 1604 and became a popular settlement from 1783 onwards, gaining incorporation just a couple of years later. Most of the people who live here today are descendants of the original settlers who were British or Irish. Today the city offers historical attractions and is a great place to shop for arts and crafts, and gifts from the many independent retailers who operate within the city.
New Brunswick Museum
It’s good to find out more about the history of a city before exploring in greater detail, and the New Brunswick Museum in Saint John is a good place to do this. The museum itself is a part of the city’s history as it was the first public museum to be opened in Canada in 1842. The museum is no longer in its original location as the exhibits got larger and larger.
Fort Howe
One of Saint John’s historic attractions is Fort Howe which was established from 1763 onwards by the British Army. The fort became the first National Historic Park within Canada (in 1914) so as to protect this historical place and although it is no longer within the National Parks system it’s a popular tourist attraction to visit the ruined fort and as a lookout over Saint John and the harbour.
Carleton Martello Tower
Another historic attraction is the Carleton Martello Tower. It was built as a lookout for use during the War of 1812 but wasn’t actually completed until after the war. It’s been in use on and off since 1813 right up until 1944 and used for numerous purposes. The Carleton Martello Tower is one of 14 within Canada and it’s now a Canadian National Historic Site.
Saint John City Market
Another first for Saint John is the City Market, the oldest operating farmer’s market in Canada. It’s popular with both locals and tourists and is set within a historic building that dates from 1876. You’ll find many different traders in here, some of the businesses have been here fro over 100 years.
