Destinations in Canada
Not to be confused with the city of Saint John in New Brunswick, the city of St John’s is the capital of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Atlantic Canada. This historic city is one of the oldest in North America as it was founded in 1583.
Flights to St John’s
The St. John's International Airport (airport code: YYT) is approximately 4 miles (6km) outside the city, and there are a limited number of flights to St John’s when coming from the UK. You can travel through New York City if you get a flight to St. John's with either United Airlines or Continental Airlines. If you prefer to transfer in Canada, Air Canada has a route that will take you to Halifax instead. Lufthansa has the only 2-stop route, through Frankfurt and then Toronto.
St John’s Tourist Attractions
St John’s is the oldest English-founded settlement in North America to have city status but it’s not the oldest settlement altogether. Even so it’s historically important and still features a number of historical attractions as well as parks, museums and culture.
Signal Hill
One of the top tourist attractions in St John’s, and an important historical location, is Signal Hill. One of the city’s best known landmarks, Cabot Tower, is situated here for starters. It was built in 1897 as a celebration of the 400th anniversary of John Cabot’s discovery of Newfoundland. The tower is at the heart of the Signal Hill National Historic Park which also includes trails, and an interpretation centre plus it includes the site where the first trans-Atlantic wireless message was received in 1901.
As well as the historical value of this attraction the walking trails give visitors some spectacular views over St John’s and out to the harbour and the Atlantic Ocean.
Downtown St John’s
Downtown St John’s is a vibrant and popular place featuring culture and heritage. It’s best known for the brightly coloured buildings of Water Street and Duckworth Street where you’ll find shops, boutiques and restaurants while at one end of Water Street is the city’s main nightlife core on a side street called George Street.
The Rooms
The Rooms is another top attraction in St John’s. This cultural centre is sat perched up on a hill overlooking St John’s so if nothing else you should visit for some great city views. The centre is best known for its major museums though, as it’s home to the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador so it’s a great place to come to learn more about the local and provincial history, art and culture.
Cape Spear National Historic Site
About a 20 minute drive outside of St John’s is another worthwhile attraction, the Cape Spear National Historic Site. This is the furthest easterly point in North America and is the site of a lighthouse dating to 1836. There’s a visitor centre, trails, World War 2 bunkers and more to explore on this rugged piece of coastline.
When Should You Visit St John’s?
St John’s doesn’t have the best weather in Canada being the windiest, cloudiest, snowiest, and wettest number of days per year out of all the major Canadian cities, however if you visit during the summer you should get mild weather at least! July is on average the warmest month with an average high of 20C and this is the least rainy month on average too. Winters are actually quite mild by Canadian standards but with the snow and wind this isn’t a good time for sightseeing!
