Canada’s largest city is Toronto, situated in the south of the province of Ontario on the shores of Lake Ontario. This is amongst the country’s top tourist destinations and has numerous attractions of interest to visitors.

Flights to Toronto

Flights to Toronto land at the Lester B Pearson International Airport (airport code: YYZ). Situated to the east of the city the airport is about a 45 minute drive from the city centre or is accessible via public transport. Flights to Toronto from the UK are available with both direct and indirect routes, and with a range of both scheduled and charter airlines. Air Canada and British Airways provide direct flights to Toronto from the UK. Icelandair, Continental Airlines, Air France, US Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, Lufthansa, Jet Airways, KLM, and Northwest Airlines all provide one stop flights to Toronto from the UK. You can also choose from a range of charter and lower cost airlines including Air Transat, Thomas Cook Airlines, and Flyglobespan.

Toronto Tourist Attractions

As well as being a large city, Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world in terms of its population. Nearly 50% of the people who now live in Toronto were born outside of Canada and this has helped to shape a culturally rich city. You can wander the streets of Toronto taking in its numerous neighbourhoods which range from Chinatown, to Little India, to Little Jamaica, and more!

As you would imagine there are many different attractions in Toronto. The city has a good selection of museums, culture and entertainment, including a theatre district, tons of shopping, sports venues and more, but if you’re only visiting Toronto for a few days, some of the most popular attractions are as follows:

The CN Tower

For 31 years until 2007 the CN Tower held the record for being the tallest free standing structure in the world, and although it has now been overtaken by the Burj Dubai it is still the tallest free standing structure in the Americas. Whether it holds the record or not this is still Toronto’s top attraction, attracting more than 2 million visitors per year.

Completed in 1976, the CN Tower was built solely as a tourist attraction and landmark for Toronto. Visitors can take the high speed glass elevator to the observation levels of which there are two – on the Look Out Level you can walk outside or stand on the Glass Floor and look down! Another elevator then whisks you up a further 33 floors to the Sky Pod. The views from u here on a clear day are amazing and it’s said that you can see for up to 100 miles into the distance, including Niagara Falls!

Casa Loma

Outside the downtown area of Toronto is another top attraction that gives you views of the city. Casa Loma is a quirky castle that was built by business man and entrepreneur Henry Pellatt in the 1920’s. Influenced by his trips to Europe, Casa Loma would not loom out of place in Scotland and from some of the castle’s towers you get great views back towards the city, including of the CN Tower!

Toronto Islands

During the summer boat cruises are popular around the harbour and Toronto Islands. These islands are great for a change of pace and feature lovely beaches and places for picnics and games. If you don’t want to get off on an island take a cruise that doesn’t stop and benefit from the great Toronto skyline views.

When Should You Visit Toronto?

For many visitors summer is the preferential time to visit. Warm temperatures average around 26.5C (80F) during mid summer, but understandably this is the busiest time of year. Late spring and early autumn can be very nice too, but winter’s may be too cold for some with the winds and snow coming off the lake!
