Destinations in Canada
Victoria is a city at the south eastern end of Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia. It’s actually the provincial capital and the second largest city in the province after Vancouver, as well as being one of the sunniest and warmest cities in the whole of Canada.
Flights to Victoria
Your flight to Victoria will land at the Victoria International Airport (airport code: YYJ), about half an hour outside the city. There is a public bus service to the airport, but the routes are not that reliable so visitors would be best advised to take a shuttle bus instead. You can get a flight to Victoria from the UK with Air Canada that connects in Calgary, or with United Airlines and transfer in San Francisco instead. Or if you want to see more of the world, fly with Northwest Airlines and travel through Amsterdam and Seattle. Another alternative is to catch a flight to Victoria via Vancouver. Land in Vancouver then get on a different airplane, or take to the waters by crossing over via one of the BC ferries.
Victoria Tourist Attractions
Victoria is a beautiful city that always earns compliments no matter what you’re looking for on holiday! Best known for its old English charm, admittedly some of the tourist oriented souvenir shops can be a bit tacky and over the top; you may even begin thinking you’d arrived in London rather than Victoria with the number of Brit culture souvenirs being sold! However, Victoria is far removed from London when you get past the souvenir shops, and is an attractive city that’s not too large, and has lots to see and do.
The Parliament Buildings
The large and impressive parliament buildings are difficult to miss, set back from the popular Inner Harbour area and with a large green space in front of them this is a grand and photogenic building. The fact that you can enter the parliament buildings and freely wander the corridors comes as a shock to some visitors who expect tight security and limitations, but this is quite indicative of the laid back kind of atmosphere the city of Victoria has!
The Fairmont Empress Hotel
The second building that dominates over the Inner Harbour is the Fairmont Empress Hotel. This very grand hotel is one of the country’s poshest and would be ‘the’ place to stay in Victoria. As you can imagine it’s not cheap staying here, but if you want to experience the high life why not pop in for high tea and admire the hotel’s interior anyway?!
Craigdarroch Castle
Away from the Inner Harbour is another very striking building, Craigdarroch Castle. This was built in the style of a Scottish castle by its owner who was missing his homeland! Now this is a popular tourist attraction and visitors can tour the castle and gardens.
Butchart Gardens
Talking of gardens, Victoria’s most famous are Butchart Gardens, situated 14 miles from the city centre. These beautiful expansive gardens are wonderful at any time of the year but during the summer you can enjoy a great fireworks display on Saturday evenings.
Pacific Undersea Gardens
Back in the Inner Harbour is the Pacific Undersea Gardens. This underwater world is essentially an aquarium but features over 5,000 lifeforms. If you enjoy this, look into going on a whale watching tour as there are several companies that operate out of Victoria.
When Should You Visit Victoria?
Victoria has a mild and fairly dry climate, making this a good city to visit throughout the year. Summers are warm and sunny, though never too hot with average highs around 20C. The climate is close to Mediterranean in character as summers are generally quite dry whilst most of the city’s rainfall is during the winter.
