Whitehorse Tourist Attractions
With its far north western location Whitehorse isn’t exactly a popular city on the tourist map of Canada, although it does appeal to a smaller number of visitors who want to see something different! If you’ve seen Canada’s major cities such as Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal then a visit to Whitehorse would be a totally different and somewhat unique experience. Although small, the city does have several museums and attractions in addition to the great Canadian outdoors.
Miles Canyon
Miles Canyon is one of Whitehorse’s top visitor attractions and is located about ten minutes from downtown. This scenic river canyon provides beautiful scenery and hiking trails to make the most of it. You can walk across the suspension bridge to take in some great views or go up to the viewpoint overlooking the canyon.
The Fish Ladder
Between mid-July and mid-August is the best time to spot the Chinook Salmon that pass along this fish ladder, swimming upstream to spawn. You can watch the waters from above or view them up close and underwater from the glass windows!
The fish ladder is just one of the things you can see along the Millennium Trail. This is a 5 kilometre (3 miles) trail that stretches alongside the Yukon River. The trail can be used by walkers, cyclists or skaters and is very nice on a warm summer day.
Waterfront Trolley
Another way to experience the Yukon River is by the historic Waterfront Trolley that runs up and down alongside the river and downtown Whitehorse, stopping at several attractions along the way.
Copperbelt Railway and Museum
About 5 minutes outside Whitehorse is the Copperbelt Railway and Museum. This is a historic site that features a miniature railway and museum exhibits plus it also makes a nice place to bring the family and enjoy a picnic.
Winter in Whitehorse
The above attractions are great for the summer months but Whitehorse is a winter destination also. Enjoy the mesmerising Northern Lights from here and head out on all kinds of adventures whether snowmobiling, skiing, ice fishing, ice climbing, dog mushing, or snowshoeing!
When Should You Visit Whitehorse?
Being a year round destination you should visit Whitehorse at the time of year that suits your needs best. The climate here is subarctic, but it’s the driest city in Canada so there’s no damp cold to pierce through you! The summer is short, lasting June to August while winter is long. Skiing can usually take place here from December to April. January is the coldest month when the average high is a cold -13C and the average low a freezing -22C!
