Winnipeg Tourist Attractions
Originally a trading centre for the Aboriginal peoples of the area, what is now Winnipeg saw its first fort established in 1738 by French fur traders, making this one of Canada’s older settlements. History remains one of Winnipeg’s top tourist attractions, but this city has a modern side too and will appeal to many different tastes. Amongst the attractions in Winnipeg some of its most popular include the following:
The Exchange District National Historic Site
Starting with the historical side of Winnipeg there’s the Exchange District. This is in the heart of the city’s historic downtown and covers an area of 20 blocks. Talk a walk around this historic district and enjoy over 150 turn of the century buildings, many of which were built during a time when Winnipeg was the fastest growing city in North America!
This is a great area for simply strolling around and soaking in the ambiance. There are many independent stores, great restaurants, art galleries, and more to visit and probably the bets way to see the area is by doing the Historic Walking Tour Program. Whether you do this or not, make sure you visit the Old Market and see what’s going on there.
The Royal Canadian Mint
Winnipeg is home to the Royal Canadian Mint where all the Canadian coins are made. The architecturally striking building is not the only attraction here as visitors can enjoy a guided tour that takes you all around the facility and shows you how coins are made. Once you’ve done the tour visit the adjacent museum.
St Boniface
The French quarter of Winnipeg is called St Boniface and this too is one of the city’s top tourist spots. Shops, restaurants and the arts are just some of the things you can enjoy here, and a guided tour of historical sites is highly recommended. Amongst this area’s top sites is the St Boniface Cathedral.
Museums in Winnipeg
As if all that history and culture wasn’t already enough Winnipeg has several museums to visit too! The Manitoba Museum looks at the province’s history, while the Manitoba Children’s Museum has a great variety of exhibits and hands-on fun. For art lovers, the Winnipeg Art Gallery will be a favourite, featuring local, national and international works.
When Should You Visit Winnipeg?
Winnipeg is characterised by extremes of temperature across the year where you can be sure of a cold winter and warm to hot summer! Typically July is the hottest month with average highs of 25.8C (78F), but actual high temperatures sin the high 30’s and even low 40’s have been recorded here! Late spring and early autumn can be pleasant but from November through to march the average high is always below zero and there’s plenty of snowfall.
