Yellowknife is the capital city of the Northwest Territories in Northern Canada and is situated on the shores of the large Great Slave Lake. Famous for its nearby discoveries of gold and later diamonds, Yellowknife also attracts tourists for its great outdoors activities.

Flights to Yellowknife

The Yellowknife Airport (airport code: YZF) serves as the busiest airport in Northern Canada and although it can handle larger aircraft it deals only with flights from within Canada; any flight to Yellowknife from the UK or Europe will therefore require a transfer at a Canadian city. Air Canada takes a route through Edmonton, and British Midland stops in Calgary. A United Airlines flight to Yellowknife transfers in Chicago and then Calgary.

Yellowknife Tourist Attractions

For a territorial capital city Yellowknife is really very small; its population is less than 20,000. The city’s fortunes have been up and down over the years since it was first established in 1936 – first there was the discovery of gold, then more recently the discovery of diamonds. Being such a small city you won’t find countless tourist attractions here, but the small town feel is appealing all the same, and there are actually a good variety of things to see and do, including making the most of the Canadian great outdoors!

Outdoor Activities in Yellowknife

If you want to experience some of Canada’s great outdoors then Yellowknife is an excellent place to do it! With many lakes and rivers nearby there’s the chance to go fishing and boating, and of course ample opportunity for hiking and camping too.

During the winter you can enjoy many different winter sports including cross country skiing, skating, curling, hockey, and more, plus winter festivals are very popular and include the dog sled races, the Snowking Festival and the Caribou Festival. During the summer Yellowknife also hosts several festivals such as the popular music festival Folk on the Rocks, and the Summer Solstice Festival.

Things to See and Do in Yellowknife

The Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre is a museum which focuses on the history and cultures of the Northwest Territories (NWT), including Inuit, Metis, and Inuvialuit, and is situated on the lakeside just outside downtown Yellowknife. There are numerous lakes surrounding Yellowknife and many of these have beaches. Generally the weather isn’t usually hot enough to enjoy swimming and sunbathing, but of course the lakes are great for boating and fishing!

The Yellowknife Old Town area is also an interesting place to visit. The old architecture is quite unique including famous buildings like the Wildcat Café which first opened in 1937 and still serves meals to this day!

When Should You Visit Yellowknife?

Though winters are a good time to watch or partake in many winter sports, this is a very cold time of the year, especially if you’re not used to cold temperatures!
