Greenland is a Danish province that is found between the Arctic and the Atlantic Ocean. In terms of Geography, Greenland is part of North America but it has always been associated with the Scandinavian countries such as Iceland, Norway and Denmark. It is the world’s largest island in the world which is not a continent in its own right. Greenland is a popular tourist attraction and its snowy climate appeals to those who love the snow, hiking, ice fishing and so on and find it an amazing place to visit. Greenland is also the home of the Eskimo (Inuit) people and survive by fishing and hunting. The population of the island is just 57,000 and due to this there is known social issues with unemployment. Another interesting fact is that Greenland enjoys two months of perpetual daylight for the year – the rest of the time the country lives darkness.

Flights

There aren’t that many flights to Greenland and therefore the prices are less competitive. You can fly to Greenland generally from London airports so you may need to fly into Heathrow in order to catch the direct flight. Booking in advance will give you the best possible price – ideally book a package which includes accommodation too since there is no guarantee you can just stroll into a hotel and get accommodation. The airlines that fly to the country include Atlantic Airways, SAS Flights, Greenland flights and Air Iceland. Flights may cost more around the winter months which is a popular time for visitors.

Climate

Greenland has a freezing cold arctic climate although there are various temperatures because of the size of the country. The winters can be severely cold and the summers are mild by comparison. Snow is especially heavy around the coast. You should be prepared when travelling to Greenland – the cold weather, ice and frost as well as the strong wind can make it dangerous for inexperienced people. You will need to visit travel specialist stores like Blacks, for wind and waterproof clothes and remember to wear suitable waterproof shoes. Layer your clothes and sunscreen and glasses are advised (the sun reflects from the snow). In the summer months (July and August) there can be many mosquitoes.

What to do

Greenland is the best place for winter sports and hiking activities. The landscape is largely unspoilt and there isn’t far to go if what you want some peace and quiet. Those who love the outdoors will love this experience, although you should go with a guided tour – going missing in the snow is no joke.

Greenland tourism’s website has colour coded hiking maps and guides for Qaqortoq, Narsarsuaq and Narsaw in the South which is a great way to explore safely and mountain huts for you to stop over in. Nonortalki is also surrounded by mountains like Ketil and Ulamertorsuaq which should only be attempted by those with some experience.

There is also Greenland National Museums in Nuuuk, which has a number of mummies from a group of women and children who were thought to have died when their boat capsized in the 1400s. Gruesome, but interesting!
