Destinations in Mexico
Acapulco was Mexico’s first real resort town and this vibrant coastal city remains very popular today with travellers from around the world. Situated on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, Acapulco is 190 miles (300km) from the capital city, Mexico City.
Flights to Acapulco
The major airport in Acapulco is the Alvarez International Airport (airport code: ACA). All flights to Acapulco will require 2 transfers when flying from London, and they will all connect through Mexico City which is only a half hour flight away. A flight with Continental Airlines will also connect in Houston, and United Airlines stops in Washington. For a European connection, Iberia has a route that connects first in Madrid, and then in Mexico City.
Acapulco Tourist Attractions
For decades Acapulco has been a top tourist attraction mostly visited for its great beaches and great weather, and that status seems unlikely to change any time soon! Although Cancun has been a popular alternative to Acapulco, the city continues to attract thousands of tourists every year, whether flying here directly or arriving on a cruise ship.
Acapulco Beaches
The beautiful bay and beaches of Acapulco is what first attracted tourists here, and the bay still retains its charm. Several beaches line the main bay and run alongside the main boulevard, called La Costera, and of course there are many excellent hotels to choose from along here.
The beaches of Acapulco have been cleaned up considerably in recent years, raising the standard, although it should be noted that this standard may still fall below those of European beaches. The beaches that are on the open ocean usually have somewhat better water quality than those on the bay.
Of course there are always plenty of opportunities for enjoying water sports; some spots are even good for surfing.
Water Park
Aimed more at kids than adults there is a water park adjacent to the main beach called CICI. This has the usual pools and slides but also has a dolphinarium where there are regular shows and the chance to swim with dolphins.
Isla de la Roqueta
Roqueta Island is another place where you can enjoy the beach as well as scenic hiking trails, great snorkelling, and a lighthouse. The island can be reached either by water taxi or spend a little more and enjoy a harbour cruise in a glass bottomed boat.
La Quebrada Cliff Divers
One of the most famous attractions of Acapulco is the Cliff Divers. Since 1934 divers have been jumping off the cliffs here into shallow and dangerous waters, though obviously it’s now a different set of divers from those who started the tradition in 1934! Watch them dive at set times of the day by paying a small entrance fee.
Nightlife in Acapulco
By night Acapulco is really swinging and has a great nightlife with some of the best and largest nightclubs in Latin America. Fun evenings can be experienced or for a quieter night there are many excellent restaurants and bars to try.
When Should You Visit Acapulco?
Throughout the year Acapulco has warm to hot weather with its tropical climate. Being on the Pacific side of Mexico it is less likely to suffer from tropical storms and hurricanes but it does still have a wet season during the summer. Winter is usually considered the better time to visit when the weather is dryer and sunny.
