Situated in central Mexico the city of Aguascalientes is also the capital of the state of the same name. The city was founded in 1575 and features an attractive collection of palaces, parks, churches, and museums.

The local airport is the Lic. Jesus Teran Peredo International Airport (airport code: AGU) 10 miles outside the city centre. Flights to Aguascalientes from the UK are fairly limited and there are no direct routes offered. Mexicana Airlines has a 1-stop route that transfers in Mexico City, or you can fly with Air France and travel through Paris and then Mexico City. Another option for flights to Aguascalientes is to arrive at Guadalajara International Airport (code: GDL) and drive from there. Delta and Virgin both have flights to Guadalajara that stop once in New York.

Aguascalientes may not be particularly well known as a tourist destination outside of Mexico, but this attractive city actually has a lot to offer those who are interested in architecture and culture.
Museums in Aguascalientes
The city has an excellent selection of museums, many of which focus on art. The Aguascalientes Museum is an art museum that’s set within an impressive neoclassical style building. There is also the Aguascalientes Museum of Contemporary Art on offer.
The Old Train Station and Railway Museum is another of the city’s museums and it’s not just for those interested in trains! The old train station is set up as it was years ago with re-created rooms including the ticket office, telegraph office and more, so it’s really quite interesting for visitors of all ages.
Landmarks in Aguascalientes
Aguascalientes has many beautiful buildings to see, both inside and out. The Camarin of San Diego is one such example that features stunning intricate decoration and is considered to be the last Baroque building in the world. Other churches include the Guadalupe Church with its very striking Baroque façade, and the Church of San Antonio, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful churches in Mexico.
Other than churches, Aguascalientes offers several palaces including the Government Palace, the Municipal Palace, and the Legislative Palace, as well as the Palace Gardens.
Parks and Gardens in Aguascalientes
There are several beautiful parks and public gardens across the city where you can join the locals and get away from city life, San Marcos Garden is one and Guadalupe Garden another.
San Marcos Fair
Aguascalientes is famous for the San Marcos Fair which takes place every year around April time, and lasts for 3 to 4 weeks. It is one of the largest fairs in Mexico and includes numerous attractions such as amusements, a casino, fireworks, culture, cuisine, bullfighting and cockfighting.
When Should You Visit Aguascalientes?
Aguascalientes has a relatively warm climate throughout the year so it’s a pleasant place to visit at any time of the year. There is a rainy season, from May to November, when rainfall is more common than in the dry season, however, rainfall is actually quite scarce at any time of the year so this should not put you off visiting.
