Destinations in Mexico
Campeche is the capital of the Mexican state of the same name and it’s located in the south east of the country on the Gulf of Mexico. Campeche has earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list because of its well preserved colonial Spanish city walls and fortifications, just one of the city’s present day tourist attractions.
Flights to Campeche
Campeche does have its own small airport (airport code: CPE) but it only handles local flights to Campeche to and from Mexico City. Your next closest choice for a flight to Campeche would be the Manuel Crescencio Rejon International Airport (code: MID) in Merida, and then it’s a 2-hour bus ride between Merida and Campeche. You can book a flight to Merida with either Mexicana Airlines or British Airways from the UK with one stop in Mexico City. Virgin Atlantic stops in New York and then Mexico City, or of course you could fly to Mexico City and take a flight to Campeche from there with either MexicanaLink or AeroMexico Connect.
Campeche Tourist Attractions
Campeche is best known for its colonial fortifications, but the city also features plenty of attractive architecture, churches, parks and gardens, so there are multiple sights to see within the city, making this a lovely place to visit for a short break.
Historic Fortified Town of Campeche
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site the fortified town of Campeche is definitely the top attraction of this city, listed because it is so well preserved. The city was founded in 1540 though it wasn’t until 1686 after numerous attacks that the Spanish decided to fortify Campeche. A huge wall was built to encircle the city, and there were eight bulwarks and four gates to allow access. The Land Gate was one of these and it was built in 1732. Today this is a main tourist attraction because it’s host to a light and sound show three nights a week.
The bulwarks are now used for different purposes – Santiago was built in the 18th century and now houses the city botanical garden, Xmuch’haltun. San Francisco houses a library and there are panoramic city views from the roof.
Soledad is the largest bulwark and it is now home to one of the city’s museums, the Museum of City History. Inside you can see exhibits on the history, archaeology and ethnography of Campeche.
Fort San Miguel and San Jose
As well as the main city fortifications there were two separate forts built that would protect Campeche from their elevated locations on the top of two hills, either side of the city. Both forts today house historical artefacts – San Miguel Fort has a museum with pre-Hispanic items, whole San Jose has a collection of boats and weapons.
Other Attractions in Campeche
The forts and fortifications are the main attractions in Campeche but there are several other things to see too. When Campeche was first founded it was built over an existing Maya city which was said to have around 3,000 houses and monuments within it. Unfortunately little remains of this ancient city but there are still a few ruins to see around Campeche today.
Campeche Cathedral is another site and it’s set on the edge of the attractive city park, called Independence Park.
When Should You Visit Campeche?
Campeche has a fairly tropical climate so it stays warm here all year round. Summer will be the wetter time of year though and there’s always the possibility of the city being affected by hurricanes coming across the Gulf of Mexico.
