Chihuahua Tourist Attractions

Chihuahua may not have the ancient ruins that many parts of Mexico is famous for, but it does offer plenty of other attractions. There’s not much in the way of colonial buildings left over from when the Spanish founded the city in 1709, as unfortunately a good many were destroyed to make way for expansion in the 1970s. The majority of architectural landmarks these days are from the 19th and 20th century.

The Federal Palace of Chihuahua

The former Federal Palace of Chihuahua is one of these landmarks. It was built in the early 20th century and until 2004 it served as the federal building for the city. Today it is the Casa Chihuahua Museum which focuses on travelling exhibits. The building also contains the jail cell of Fr Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla who is considered to be the Father of Mexico, and his jail cell is a national shrine.

The Historical Museum of the Mexican Revolution

Housed within the former home of General Francisco Villa this museum features a large collection of memorabilia from the life of Villa, all of which was handed to the Mexican government upon Mrs Villa’s death in 1981. It’s interesting to view the home and memorabilia, including the old Dodge car in which Villa and his bodyguards were assassinated.

San Francisco Temple

The Church or Temple of San Francisco is one of Chihuahua’s main catholic churches and is one of the only remaining original colonial buildings in Chihuahua. It was built from 1715 onwards and was actually one of the first churches to be built in the city. This was the original resting place for the Father of the Country, Fr Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1881 until his body was moved to Mexico City. However a placard marks the spot within the church.

Other Landmarks in Chihuahua

In addition to those landmarks above, there are several other landmarks of interest in Chihuahua to look out for. These include the Cathedral of Chihuahua which another one of the few remaining colonial buildings left in the city. Construction on this began in 1725 and it features magnificent baroque architecture.

The City Hall of Chihuahua dates from the early 20th century, while the Government Palace of Chihuahua was built in the 19th century and has shrine marking the exact spot where Miguel Hidalgo was executed.

When Should You Visit Chihuahua?

Chihuahua is quite a dry city thanks to its semi-arid climate. There’s little in the way of rainfall except in July, August and September when levels are far higher than the rest of the year. In terms of temperature it stays warm to hot. The average high in January is a very pleasant 17C, while the average high in June (the hottest month) is 33C.
