Destinations in Mexico
Ciudad Obregon is a city in northern Mexico and it’s the second largest city of the Mexican state of Sonora. A relatively young city compared to many in Mexico you might think Ciudad Obregon would have little in the way of tourist attractions when in fact it’s a popular tourist destination with a variety of things to see and do.

Ciudad Obregon Tourist Attractions
Established in 1910 Ciudad Obregon is a fairly young city but has strong cultural roots in the local Yaqui tribe. This relationship provides Ciudad Obregon with cultural attractions that tourists will find of interest, in addition to the surrounding scenery, recreation and more that’s available within the city. Some of the attractions include the following:
The Yaqui Museum
You can find out more about the roots and culture of the local Yaqui tribe at the Yaqui Museum located just 10 minutes outside of Ciudad Obregon. Locals and tourists are encouraged to visit the museum to find out about the folklores and the heritage of the Yaqui while the museum aims to spread and preserve the Yaqui way of life. The tribe’s scenes of daily life make the museum interesting for visitors of all ages.
Centre for Popular Cultures
Along similar lines to the Yaqui Museum is Ciudad Obregon’s Centre for Popular Cultures. This exhibition type attraction aims to promote and spread the cultural values of many of the local Sonoran ethnic cultures and the centre includes numerous local cultural exhibits and more.
Alvaro Obregon Dam
Also called the Oviachic Dam this dam was built between 1947 and 1952 and created a huge network of canals and waterways that have made this one of the region’s most popular outdoor recreation areas. There are many things you can do here including camping, boating, fishing, swimming and water sports, and around Lake Oiachic in particular there’s now a fairly substantial resort area.
Nainari Lagoon
The Nainari Lagoon offers similar activities to the above, and is particularly popular for water sports and as a destination for family days out and picnics, and is well known for its coconut stands and restaurants!
