Flights to Ciudad Victoria
Just outside of Victoria is the General Pedro J. Mendez International Airport (airport code: CVM) though there are currently no international flights to Victoria that land there. Flights to Ciudad Victoria therefore will have either 1 or 2 stops from the UK, depending on the airline. Mexicana Airlines offers 1-stop flights that transfer in Mexico City, and they also have a 2-stop route that goes through New York as well as Mexico City. Another 2-stop route goes through Montreal and Mexico City, and that’s a flight to Ciudad Victoria with British Airways.
Ciudad Victoria Tourist Attractions
Founded in 1750 Victoria is a historic Mexican city that was formerly called Villa de Santa Maria de Aguayo. It was later renamed Ciudad Victoria in 1825 when the town became a city and was named in honour of the first president of Mexico, Guadalupe Victoria. When the railroad came to Victoria in 1890 the city grew in importance and a number of monuments and attractive buildings were constructed during the next few decades, several of which still stand in the city today and are important landmarks.
Compared to some Mexican cities Victoria only has a few tourist attractions so it probably wouldn’t be a destination you’d stay in for more than a few days, but while you’re here, the following attractions could be considered:
Tourists who enjoy being outdoors and visiting natural attractions will enjoy a visit to the Anacahuita Botanical Gardens. These gardens are a great introduction to the different plant species of the Tamaulipas state as it features several different sections dedicated to the different regions of the state, and the flowers and plants native to them. The gardens are usually open from Monday to Saturday between the hours of 8am and 4pm.
On a similar subject but concentrating on the animal kingdom is the Tamatan Zoo. Victoria’s zoo is open every day of the week between 10am and 5pm.
Visitors who prefer to concentrate their sightseeing to the city centre will find that Ciudad Victoria is a relatively modern city with a number of cultural attractions. These include the Anthropology and History Museum of the State University, and TAMUX – the Tamaulipas Natural History Museum. In terms of architecture there’s the large public square, called the Plaza de Armas, along with some pretty churches and cathedrals to see.
When Should You Visit Ciudad Victoria?
Victoria has a warm climate so essentially it can be visited at any time of the year for sightseeing. Average high temperatures range between 25C in January up to 36C in July while average lows drop down to 11C in January and 21 from June to September, so nights are warm during the summer. Rainfall is fairly low in Victoria but half of the year’s allocation falls between May and September so this is the only drawback of visiting during the summer. For the driest weather visit between November and February.
