Culiacan Tourist Attractions
Located in a valley where the Tamazula and Humaya Rivers meet to form the Culiacan River, the city of Culiacan is a historic town though it only really grew in size and importance from the 1950s onwards. This means visitors shouldn’t expect to find a plethora of colonial architecture as in some other Mexican cities, but what you will find in Culiacan and the surrounding region is a mixture of attractions.
In Culiacan itself there are several landmarks to look out for. The best place to see colonial structures is in the downtown, particularly on Rosales Street, which sits between the Cathedral and Rosales Square. The cathedral was started in the 1830s while also from this era is Plazuela Alvaro Obregon which was the place for social gatherings in the 1800s. Another landmark is up on a hill overlooking the city, and offering some great views of Culiacan. This is the city’s tallest church, called Templo de Nuestra Senora de Guadelupe.
Culiacan is home to several cultural attractions too including museums and a cultural centre. The city is home to the fifth largest meteorite on earth, situated within the Culiacan science museum (Centro de Ciencias de Sinaloa). In downtown Culiacan there’s a city art museum while in Constitution Park you’ll find the Regional History Museum.
The cultural centre is called the Centro Cultural Genaro Estrada and it houses several museums dedicated to local culture, plus a theatre and cinema. There’s also an orchestra here that performs from September to June, performing all manner of concerts including pops, symphony and chamber music.
Shopaholics will find there are plenty of places in Culiacan to keep you occupied! There are a number of large shopping malls that include big name stores such as Sears, and one that also features a cinema.
