Destinations in Mexico
Officially called Victoria de Durango, and sometimes known as Ciudad de Durango, this city is the capital and largest of the Mexican state of Durango in Northern Mexico. Up until now Durango hasn’t been one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations, but this is gradually changing as tourists discover just what it has to offer.
Flights to Durango
Outside of Durango is the General Guadalupe Victoria International Airport (airport code: DGO). Most flights to Durango from the UK have 2 connections, but there are a couple of 1-stop options with Continental Airlines or United Airlines. They both transfer in Houston. British Airways goes a totally different way for its flight to Durango, with connections in New York and Mexico City. The one-stop flights are generally around 15 hours long, while the 2-stop flights to Durango are usually closer to 30 hours.
Durango Tourist Attractions
Durango is a historic city, founded in 1563 by Francisco de Ibarra who bought a local mine with the intention of employing people there as long as they settled within the newly formed town. His strategy worked and the town grew into another of Mexico’s colonial towns. Today it’s a vibrant city and is the capital of the state of Durango, and it has an attractive range of colonial architecture dating back hundreds of years. Among the landmarks and attractions in Durango are the following:
Catedral Basilica Menor
Right in the heart of Durango is one of the city’s older buildings. Usually known as Catedral Basilica de Durango it is officially called Catedral Basilica Menor and is widely accepted as one of the most beautiful buildings in Northern Mexico, construction of which originally began back in 1695. The baroque style façade is very ornate and features the image of St Peter and St Paul while inside has some beautiful features too such as the carved mahogany choir stage, and the altar paintings.
Other Landmarks in Durango
As you wander around Durango you’ll se numerous other attractive buildings. There are several styles of architecture used here and the different influences are said to be from Madrid, Paris and Barcelona. Durango City Hall (Palacio Municipal) is one of the city’s landmarks. It’s built in the neoclassical style and was originally constructed as the home of a wealthy miner in 1898. The city bought it in 1930 and made it into Durango City Hall.
Palacio de Gobierno is an older building which takes on the baroque style and was constructed in the late 18th century and has many beautiful and ornate features.
Guadiana Park
A major public park in Durango is Guadiana Park, and it’s recognised for the many benefits it brings to the city and its people. The park is an urban forest that provides a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city streets, with paths for walking and running, and a bicycle path. There are other features such as an Olympic sized swimming pool, fountains and a lake which has a small train that circumnavigates it.
When Should You Visit Durango?
Durango’s climate is semi-arid so for most of the year it remains a very dry city. Summer is the wettest time of year though with the most rain occurring between June and September. May and June are actually the hottest months when the average high is 31C, and on average winters are quite warm with average highs up around 20C but average lows dropping to only 2C.
