Guadalajara Tourist Attractions
Guadalajara may not be as well known outside of Mexico as Mexico City, but this city does have quite a lot to offer if you wanted to experience some Mexican culture but would rather not do so on the very busy streets of the capital.
Guadalajara Historic Centre
The oldest part of the city is where many tourists will begin their visit to Guadalajara. You’ll find a number of impressive landmarks here including the Metropolitan Cathedral, built in the renaissance style but with neo-Gothic towers. Construction started in the mid-1500s after the original church that stood here was severely damaged by fire.
The Rotunda of Illustrious Men (Rotunda de los Hombres Ilustres) is a monument built to honour ‘distinguished people from Jalisco’. It’s not as old as its surroundings as was constructed in 1952, but the circular monument with seven columns is striking all the same. It’s surrounded by a park that makes a nice place to sit and relax, or you can visit one of the other four major parks and squares in the historic centre.
Jalisco Regional Museum is one of Guadalajara’s museums and it is surprisingly filled with interesting exhibits. The permanent collection spans 16 halls including sections on archaeology, paleontology and pre-history and one of the top attractions is the skeleton of a mammoth.
Other places to look out for within the historic centre of Guadalajara include the Legislative Palace, the Governor’s Office, the Palace of Justice, and the Old University Building.
Guadalajara Zoo
For a change from the urban attractions of Guadalajara you can visit the city’s zoo, situated on the edge of the downtown area. As zoos go this one is popular and great if you’re visiting Guadalajara with children. Attractions include a safari ride, tropical forest and a varied collection of animals.
When Should You Visit Guadalajara?
Guadalajara has a humid subtropical climate giving the city warm weather throughout the year. For most of the year the city is very dry, but between June and September Guadalajara is affected by the North American Monsoon which drops significant rainfall on the city, so this probably isn’t a good time to visit! Winter time temperatures are mild though – January for example, is the coolest month though the average high is still 24C.
