Guaymas is a city in Mexico and significant port located on the coast of the state of Sonora in northwest Mexico. It’s just 242 miles from the US border and is a popular tourist destination for the many beaches situated around and just outside the city.

General Jose Maria Yanez International Airport (airport code: GYM) handles some international flights to Guaymas, but mostly there are only domestic flights, so you'll have to book a 2-stop flight when travelling from the UK. A flight to Guaymas with Virgin Atlantic will stop in New York City and Phoenix, which is the same route taken by Delta. Air Canada will take you via Calgary before transferring in Phoenix. You can take another path through Canada with United Airlines, and their flight to Guaymas has connections in Toronto and Phoenix.

Guaymas Tourist Attractions

The beaches that are situated just outside the centre of Guaymas are usually cited as the main tourist attraction in this Mexican city. There are said to be over 70 miles of beaches in Guaymas so plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the beach and the waters, and of course the hot and dry climate that Guaymas experiences. The fact that Guaymas is also a large and important port means there’s always something going on in the city and usually an abundance of fresh seafood to enjoy in the city’s many restaurants. The Carnival of Guaymas

The Carnival of Guaymas may not be as famous as other carnivals around the world but it’s very popular all the same. It’s actually one of the major carnivals to be held in Mexico each year and is one of the oldest in the country as it’s been going since 1888.

Guaymas Carnival takes place over the course of several days and highlights include the parade, concerts and numerous other events that occur in different venues across the city.

San Carlos

Of the popular beaches in the municipality of Guaymas, San Carlos is often the most popular. This is a town in its own right with plenty of services and amenities for visiting tourists, though of course the centre of Guaymas is not far away if you want to do something different.

Diving and fishing are particularly popular pastimes, and of course relaxing on the beach and swimming in the warm waters. There’s beautiful scenery and landscapes to explore, making mountain biking and hiking a popular activity too.

When Should You Visit Guaymas?

Guaymas has a desert-like arid climate so it remains warm to hot, and mostly dry throughout the year. Summers are popular if you like high temperatures though many visitors find the summer a little too hot for comfort. Winter in Guaymas is also popular and there are many visitors who come down from the United States and Canada to enjoy the warm winter climate and little rainfall, and stay for many weeks or even months at a time.
