Hermosillo Tourist Attractions
Whether you’re visiting Hermosillo to stay in the city or you prefer to travel to the coastal areas of the larger municipality you’ll find there’s a good selection of attractions to enjoy. The city itself offers some great architecture, culture and museums, and among the popular things to see and do are the following:
The Regional Museum
Because Hermosillo is the capital of the state of Sonora the city is home to the Regional Museum. The museum’s two large halls focus on anthropology and history and offer an interesting look into the history of the region. Exhibits include archaeological finds as well as colonial history such as old maps and documents, coins and more.
Hermosillo Cathedral
Named Catedral de la Asuncion, Hermosillo’s cathedral is one of the city’s major landmarks. Construction began back in the 18th century but it took until the 20th century for the cathedral to finally be fully completed. As so much time passed during construction there are several architectural elements in the building including Neoclassical and Neogothic, which are two quite contrasting styles. Inside is very Neoclassical in style.
Plaza Zaragoza
In the centre of Hermosillo is the Plaza Zaragoza, a city square that was built in 1865. As well as the square’s flower gardens and several statues the square is surrounded by the cathedral and the State Government Palace which is often illuminated at night.
Ecological Centre of Sonora
The Ecological Centre of Sonora (or Centro Ecologico De Sonora) is just outside Hermosillo. It’s a combination of zoo and botanical garden with over 300 species of plants and 200 species of animals that are from the Sonoran region as well as from around the world. The natural habitats that the animals are kept in make this a pleasant place to visit for tourists of all ages.
When Should You Visit Hermosillo?
Hermosillo’s southern location makes this a city with warm to hot temperatures throughout the year, though the summertime highs may be too hot for some visitors! July is the hottest month with an average high of 42C and average low of 28C, so nights don’t bring much respite from the heat. Winter may be a better time to visit as temperatures are still high – the average high in January is 24C. July and August are the wettest months and there’s very little rainfall the rest of the year.
