A designated tourist area, Huatulco caters to those visitors who enjoy the beach and the water. There are 36 beaches and 9 secluded bays in Huatulco, making it ideal for water sports and sunbathing along the southern coast of Mexico. There are numerous tour companies that offer scuba diving, snorkelling and even white water rafting; just a few of the activities you could enjoy.

Flights to Huatulco

The Huatulco International Airport (airport code: HUX) generally only handles direct international flights to Huatulco during the popular winter months. The small airport can be very crowded during the busy tourist seasons. A flight to Huatulco from the UK with Mexicana Airlines has one transfer in Mexico City, but most other flights will have 2 stops. Continental Airlines travels through Houston and Mexico City, but a flight to Huatulco with Iberia has its connections in Madrid and then Mexico City.

La Gloria Coffee Plantation

Not only can you tour a family-run coffee plantation, you can enjoy the unique pleasure of the open-air butterfly sanctuary on the grounds. While you're there, you can taste the home-grown coffee and sample a home-cooked lunch of traditional local foods.

Hagia Sofia

Deemed an "agro-ecological development", the Hagia Sophia is a nature park with walking trails that will take you through some very lovely natural landscapes. The park is filled with trees, flowers, rivers, waterfalls and a large population of butterflies. Crops are also grown there, providing fresh produce for the food served. You'll have to contact the park to make a tour reservation in advance rather than just showing up on the day.

Bahias de Huatulco National Park

Near the town of Santa Maria Huatulco, this 30,000 acre protected park is filled with forests, mangroves and hundreds of species of animals and birds. Along the coastal part of the park, you can sometimes see whales and dolphins out in the ocean.

Punta Celeste

Punta Celeste is the site of an archaeological dig where Zapotec ruins have been excavated. There is a burial area, sacrificial shrines and several small pyramid structures at Punta Celeste that you can walk through. Not all areas are open to the public though. These ruins date back to 500 BC and little is known about the people who used this site.

Mazunte Turtle Sanctuary

It's both a sanctuary and a museum that’s dedicated to the sea turtles that come to the beaches around Huatulco. There are large aquariums that house numerous species of sea turtle, and you can also see where the eggs are kept and incubated for their conservation efforts. The centre is closed on Mondays but is open the rest of the week for tours.

When Should You Visit Huatulco?

The rainy season is between June and November, though it's not too wet to enjoy the area during this time. If you are there to see the natural landscape, the rainy season is actually best as this is when all the plants are in bloom. The temperatures tend to be fairly steady through the year, around 28C (82F) and usually sunny.
