Not to be confused with the city of La Paz in Bolivia, Mexico’s La Paz is situated at the southern end of the Baja California peninsula. This coastal city is growing in popularity both as a place for tourism and a destination for retirees from the United States.

Air traffic to La Paz is serviced by the Aeropuerto Internacional General Manuel Marquez de Leon (airport code: LAP). There is frequent taxi and shuttle service between the city and the airport, but you should try to arrange transport with your hotel to get the best rate. All flights to La Paz have 2 transfers when travelling from London. Nearly all airlines have the same route for their flights to La Paz, travelling through Los Angeles and then Guadalajara. Some examples are Virgin Atlantic, Air New Zealand, United Airlines and Continental.

La Paz Tourist Attractions

Though not as well known as its Bolivian namesake, La Paz in Mexico is becoming a popular tourist destination and an alternative to some of Mexico’s larger and more hectic coastal towns and tourist resorts. This is not to say that La Paz is a sleepy little town, on the contrary it does have a vibrant nightlife and there are some great nightclubs right on the waterfront.

In terms of specific tourist attractions La Paz is not a destination you would visit to enjoy museums and cultural attractions. It’s making its name as an eco tourism destination and is favoured for its great beaches and diving opportunities. The Bay of La Paz is actually home to around 900 islands and inlets, a number of which are protected by UNESCO as World Heritage Bio-Reserves. So what are the popular things to do in La Paz?

The Bay of La Paz

The Bay of La Paz has undoubtedly become the main attraction for visitors to La Paz. As well as the beautiful islands found here the whole Bay is ideal for enjoying scuba diving and snorkelling, and there’s plenty to see underwater. Above water the inlets are perfect for non-motorised boating, such as kayaking, giving you the chance to explore the little inlets and moor up to enjoy a night of camping under the stars.

Motorised boats are also seen in some parts of the Bay and if you haven’t come to La Paz by means of your own boat you should be able to charter one for a day or more from one of the city’s popular marinas or boatyards. Enjoy some fishing on your own, or go out on a fishing tour.

Speaking of tours, La Paz is the starting point for several boat tours including those that go whale watching, and some that offer you the chance to swim with dolphins.

Of course where there’s a coastline there are usually beaches, and La Paz has its share of excellent beaches to offer its visitors.

Restaurants and Nightlife in La Paz

La Paz is home to some wonderful restaurants and there’s always an abundance of seafood on the menu, include some dishes that you might not have tried before such as fish tacos! In the evening the city comes alive, especially on the waterfront where there are several nightclubs, and usually good humoured fun where the locals mix with the tourists.

When Should You Visit La Paz?

La Paz is a warm and sunny city that doesn’t experience much in the way of rainfall. The hottest months are between July and September when you can usually rely on temperatures in the 30’s C (90’sF). Even during the winter La Paz is mild, though not usually warm enough for swimming.
