Destinations in Mexico
Oaxaca is a city in southern Mexico that’s built up a strong tourism economy due mostly to its extensive colonial era buildings within its historical centre, and its archaeological sites, which together have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Flights to Oaxaca
There is an airport in the city, the Oaxaca-Xoxocotlan Airport (airport code: OAX), but it handles flights to Oaxaca that go to and from Mexico City almost exclusively, hence any flights to Oaxaca from South Africa will require two connections. The airport is 7 kilometres outside the city, with shuttle buses and taxi service but no public buses. All flights to Oaxaca from South Africa have 2 connections, with the second one always being Mexico City. Delta Airlines has a first stop in Atlanta, while Air New Zealand stops in Los Angeles, and Continental Airlines connects in Houston. British Airways has a flight to Oaxaca that travels through New York and then Mexico City.
Oaxaca Tourist Attractions
Oaxaca is a beautiful city that’s best enjoyed simply by wandering around the streets, admiring the architecture and taking in some of the city’s culture, which includes some great cuisine. The historical centre of Oaxaca, along with the archaeological site of Monte Alban have together been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 when they were inscribed due to their cultural significance, and these two areas are the top attractions in Oaxaca.
Monte Alban
The pre-Columbian city of Monte Alban is situated just 6 miles outside Oaxaca, so it’s easy to get to. Set on a ridge, the extensive ruins also offer some excellent views. Most of the ruins can actually be climbed and there are impressive structures to see. A main plaza links the south platform and the north platform which are in turn accessed via a huge staircase.
Mitla
A little further out from the streets of Oaxaca is another archaeological site, named Mitla. This one sits about 25 miles out and also features pre-Columbian Mesoamerican ruins including a Column of Life, one of its most popular attractions.
Downtown Oaxaca
When you’re wandering around the centre of Oaxaca there are several prominent landmarks to look out for. This includes the Metropolitan Cathedral which is the largest church in Oaxaca and dates back to 1533. It’s particularly noted for its unique take on baroque architecture. Another church is the Ex Convento de Santo Domingo which is an historical church that has been renovated and now has a Cultural Centre next door. There are several other beautiful churches around Oaxaca as well.
Oaxaca Museums
The Cultural Centre of Santo Domingo (as mentioned above) acts as one of the city’s museums and features some important artefacts from Monte Alban; it’s also home to the Museum of Oaxacan Cultures.
The Museum of Contemporary Art is another of Oaxaca’s interesting museums and is worth a visit even if art is not your thing because it is housed within one of the oldest buildings in Oaxaca
Other Attractions in Oaxaca
The city’s parks are very beautiful too and are often linked to monasteries. These include the Ethnobotanical Garden that surrounds the former Santo Domingo Monastery, and the Plaza de la Danza y Jardin Socrates.
When Should You Visit Oaxaca?
If you’re not planning to experience one of the city’s festivals then it’s probably best to avoid Holy Week, July, and New Year as these are the times when Oaxaca is most crowded. Otherwise Oaxaca has a milder climate than some cities at this latitude, due to its high elevation, but days are still warm and the average high temperature does not vary too much across the year.
