Puebla Tourist Attractions
Puebla Cathedral
The Roman Catholic Puebla Cathedral was built in the colonial style and it has the tallest towers in the country. Work began on the church in the mid 1500s but it was not completed for nearly another hundred years. There are 14 separate chapels within the church and it has been dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
El Parian
El Parian is the local marketplace for Puebla, to the northwest of downtown. It’s the ideal spot to go looking for Mexican handicrafts and souvenirs. There are baskets, pottery, jewellery, clothing, food, carvings and many other types of merchandise for sale and great for buying gifts or treating yourself! It's located in a historic part of town that is worth taking a walk through once you're done with your shopping.
Museo Amparo
Museo Amparo has collections of items on display from the pre-Hispanic period to more modern colonial times. There are also exhibits of local artwork along with the cultural artefacts for a full picture of the local life.
Local Forts
To the north of Puebla, you can see Fort Loreto and Fort Guadalupe. They were important fortifications during the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The two buildings are on opposite sides of a hill, and there are two different museums in Fort Loreto; the Fort War Museum, and the Museum of Non-Intervention. You can see all of Puebla from the hill so enjoy the view while you explore the old forts.
Cuexcomate
Cuexcomate is an unusual sight within a city; a small inactive volcano with a staircase that takes you down into the crater. It was formed by a volcanic geyser in 1064 and now stands at just over 40 feet tall. It hasn't had any activity since its last eruption in 1662, so it is perfectly safe. There are stairs on the outside that will take you to the top, as well as down within the hill.
Cantona Ruins
More than a thousand years ago, Cantona was a Meso-American city controlled by the Toltecs. Today it is a large site of ruins that include roads, ball courts, temples and more than 3,000 individual residence buildings. The area is near the village of Tepeyahualco which is not that far from Puebla. But several of the roads are in poor shape, so allow for at least 2 hours for the drive.
