Puerto Escondido is a Mexican city that's a little off the beaten path for tourists, but more and more people are visiting to enjoy the natural surroundings and the extensive beachfront areas. Not far from flashy Acapulco, Puerto Escondido is a more laid-back approach to seeing Mexico.
Flights to Puerto Escondido
Most flights to Puerto Escondido International Airport (airport code: PXM) will have 2 connections from the UK, except with Mexicana Airlines. Their flight to Puerto Escondido only stops once in Mexico City. You can also take a flight that will transfer in New York and then Mexico City, with either Virgin Atlantic or Delta Airlines. Another option is with American Airlines, and they stop in Dallas and Mexico City. Flights to Puero Escondido will range between 24 and 30 hours, depending on connections.
Puerto Escondido Tourist Attractions
The Beaches
The beaches are the main attraction for Puerto Escondido, both for swimming and for surfing. If you are looking for excellent surf, you need to head to Zicatala Beach. Major surfing competitions are held here and it’s considered one of the best places to surf in the entire world. For simpler swimming and sunbathing, you can have a good time at Playa Marinero, Playa Principal or Playa Carrizalillo.
Fishing
For some more time on the water, you can take a fishing charter and go out into the deeper water to search for sailfish, tuna or marlin. If you don't really want to fish, other boat tours can also take you out to just enjoy the scenery. If you are lucky, you can see sea turtles and dolphins.
Laguna de Manialtepec
A short drive west of Puerto Escondido is the Laguna de Manialtepec, a popular tourist spot where you can walk through mangrove jungles and enjoy the sheltered lagoon. You can take a boat out on the water if you wish to see everything the lagoon has to offer. Many species of birds nest here, and at certain times of the year, the water will glow with phosphorescence because of an algae that lives in the lagoon.
Chacahua National Park
The Chacahua National Park is about 80 miles (50km) away from Puerto Escondido, and you can spend a whole day out in the natural surroundings while you're there. The landscapes are quite varied around the park. Aside from the number of lagoons and coves, you can see wetlands, mangrove forests, sand dunes, palm trees and even some grassy savannah areas. Boat tours from town are common and a good way to see the coastal parts of the park.
El Mercado
Like most towns, there is a vibrant open-air market in Puerto Escondido where you can go shopping for crafts, fresh fruit, textiles and all kinds of local souvenirs. You should visit at least once while you are here.
When Should You Visit Puerto Escondido?
Weather in Puerto Escondido is going to be sunny and very warm no matter when you plan your trip. There is very little seasonal variation in climate. It will be an average of 29C (84F) during the day, and cooling off to around 23C (74F) in the evenings. It's ideal weather for swimming, surfing and outdoor sightseeing.
