A very popular tourist destination for its numerous beach resorts, Puerto Vallarta is located on the western coast of Mexico. Most of the local attractions revolve around the coast and the beaches, so most tourists come to the city to spend their time outside.

Flights to Puerto Vallarta

Just north of the city is the Gustavo Diaz International Airport (airport code: PVR). There are taxi and bus services into Puerto Vallarta, though the bus will not take passengers with too many suitcases, however, most hotels or tour companies will arrange a shuttle for you. When taking a flight to Puerto Vallarta from London, most routes will have 2 transfer stops except for British Airways and Mexicana, which stop once in Mexico City. United Airlines travels through Chicago and then Mexico City before continuing its flight to Puerto Vallarta.

Puerto Vallarta Zoological Gardens

The Puerto Vallarta Zoo is about half an hour away from downtown, and has a collection of more than 100 different types of animals for you to see. There are a number of African animals such as lions and zebras, as well as many South American species like the jaguar and numerous kinds of monkeys. You can feed many of the animals with snacks provided by the zoo, allowing you to get closer to them.

Whale Watching

If you are going to be in Puerto Vallarta between early December and late March, this is the perfect time to go out on the water with a whale-watching boat tour. The best locations are out in Banderas Bay where you will see the migrating Humpback whales.

Los Arcos Marine Natural Area

About 7 miles (12km) away from Puerto Vallarta to the south is the Los Arcos Marine Natural Area where people come for excellent swimming, scuba diving and snorkelling. There are underwater caves and many fossilized coral beds, giving you lots of sights to see.

Beaches and Water

And of course in Puerto Vallarta there are all the beaches! There are more than 40 lovely beaches around the city that have sunbathing, swimming, scuba diving, boating, surfing and jet-skiing opportunities. Los Muertos is a very popular beach and is located right in the old quarter of the city. Other beaches to the north and south of Puerto Vallarta are Playa de oro, Destilederas and Playa de Mismaloya.

Sierra Madre

There are other landscapes around Puerto Vallarta besides the beach and open water. The Sierra Madre mountain chain is not far away, and if offers a wide range of more rugged activities when you are finished with all your sunbathing. The best hiking areas are typically reached by jeep so you will want to hook up with a tour company to take you out. Once in the mountains, you can hike through the mountain forests or stick with the jeep for a driving tour.

When Should You Visit Puerto Vallarta?

If you plan on spending your vacation on the beach or in the water, you may not mind the hotter summer weather. For other types of sight-seeing, plan to visit when it is cooler. Temperatures will reach around 33C (91F) from June until November, though July will be 2 or 3 degrees even hotter. Visit during the winter for milder weather, with daytime temperatures hitting 29C (84F) from December until March.
