Continental travels through Houston, and Mexicana Airlines connects in Mexico City. Both Virgin Atlantic and Delta have a 2-stop flight to Veracruz through New York and Mexico City.
Veracruz Tourist Attractions
Though not traditionally recognised as a tourist destination Veracruz does have a variety of attractions of interest, and the city has been expanding its range o attractions over recent years. From the historical fort to its municipal palace, there is plenty of architecture in Veracruz, and with the newer aquarium and city museum there are attractions that would suit the whole family here too.
Fort San Juan de Ulua
Situated on an island that has since been connected to the mainland, this fort is at the point where the Spanish first landed with intentions of conquering Mexico. Construction of the fort began in 1582 with the purpose of protecting Veracruz from pirates. The Spanish enlarged the port in 1635 and it was completed in 1707. The fort was used for military purposes on several other occasions in the city’s history, then in the 19th century it was converted into a notorious military prison.
The Municipal Palace
Along with the fort the Municipal Palace in Veracruz is a large landmark. It was built in 1608 for the city council but was remodelled to what you see now in the 18th century. The Municipal Palace is the oldest city government building in Mexico.
Other Architecture in Veracruz
In addition to the above two there are numerous other impressive buildings in Veracruz. These include the cathedral, named Virgen de la Asuncion, which was finished in 1731 but did not officially become a cathedral until 1963. Other historical buildings include the old lighthouse, the Old Customs Building, and the old railroad terminal.
Veracruz Aquarium
A more modern attraction is the Veracruz Aquarium. It was built in 1992 and is said to be the largest and most important aquarium in Latin America. There are many exhibits here including one dedicated to the gentle manatees, and reef tank best known for its sharks.
The City Museum
The City Museum is a good place to visit to find out more about the long history of Veracruz and the important part it has played in the history and culture of Mexico. The museum is housed within a former asylum building that operated here for nearly 100 years.
