The U.S. State of Alabama is located in the southern United States and has borders with Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi, plus a small area of coast on the Gulf of Mexico. The Tourist Attractions of Alabama

Birmingham

Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama and location of the state’s main airport. The city was named after Birmingham in England, and like its counterpart it was developed as an industrial city from its founding in 1871.

There are a good number of attractions in this Alabama city, including museums like the Vulcan Statue and Museum, historic landmarks such as the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark in addition to the Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Montgomery

Alabama is a state which played an important part in the history of the United States and the capital of Alabama, Montgomery, is where much of this history took place. The Alabama State Capitol Building served for a short time as the Capitol of the Confederacy in 1861 and the building has been declared a National Historic Landmark in recognition of this. The building you see here now is the second to have stood here and was built in 1851 when the original building burnt down after just two years.

Alabama was also important in the Civil Rights Movement, and here in Montgomery you can visit the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church where Martin Luther King Jr. preached for six years, plus there’s the Civil Rights Memorial.

Alabama Mountains

In the north of Alabama is the state’s mountainous region where visitors can explore parts of the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains. Hiking, camping and more are popular here with visitors who want t enjoy some of the beautiful scenery, which includes the Natural Bridge Park. Here you’ll see the largest natural bridge east of the Rockies in addition to the interesting American Indian head carved into a nearby rock outcrop.

A good way to see these parts of Alabama is in a rental car. Tours you can take include the Talladega Scenic Drive. This is most attractive in the autumn when the colours are changing.

One of the towns in this part of Alabama is Huntsville. Huntsville is home of the Marshall Space Flight Center and the US Space and Rocket Center Museum.

When Should You Visit Alabama?

Alabama has a humid Subtropical climate which means summers in particular are hot and humid, and can be long lasting! The average high temperature in July is 34C, and although spring and autumn are short the temperatures are still hot though not quite as hot and humid as in the summer. Winters are mild in Alabama with an average high in January of 14C.
