Montgomery Tourist Attractions
Montgomery was incorporated in 1819 when two towns merged together. The city became the capital of Alabama in 1846 and in 1861 for a very brief period, Montgomery was the capital of the Confederate States of America. So there’s quite a lot of history in Montgomery, and historic attractions include Old Alabama Town and the State Capitol.
Old Alabama Town
The popular Old Alabama Town is in the historic downtown of Montgomery and covers an area of six blocks, so it’s quite sizeable. Not all of the buildings here are originals, as a number of them have been relocated here to give visitors a really good taste of the variety of styles and wealth that would have been found within Montgomery and the state of Alabama as a whole. This really gives tourists a great sense of the differences in class a couple of hundred years ago.
Alabama State Capitol
Another taste of history can be experienced by visiting the Alabama State Capitol, which stands at one end of the Old Town. The original state capitol was burnt to the ground so this replacement was built in 1851 on the same site. It’s an important building in the history of Montgomery, and of the whole United States, because it served as the Capitol of the Confederacy in 1861, and was the First Confederate Capitol. The first and only President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis, was sworn in right on these steps, and there’s a plaque commemorating this event.
Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts
One of the major museums in Montgomery is the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. It was established in 1930 and ahs a permanent collection that includes Southern regional art, plus American art and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries. European masters are also featured here plus of course there are often temporary exhibitions happening too.
The Hank Williams Museum
Most visitors to Montgomery will have heard of Hank Williams even if you weren’t a fan, but this country music singer is buried here in Montgomery, in the Oakwood Cemetery. The museum has one of the largest collections of Hank Williams memorabilia in the world and makes for an interesting visit.
When Should You Visit Montgomery?
Montgomery stays quite warm throughout the year, thanks to its southerly location. Summers are hot, wet and humid though, so not the best weather for sightseeing. If you leave your visit until autumn the temperatures are a little milder and it’s not so wet and humid, making October and November nice months.
When Should You Visit Birmingham?
Like the rest of Alabama, Birmingham has a hot southern climate. Summers are long with high temperatures and high humidity. The July and August highs are around 32C (90F). Winters are mild, though probably the best times to visit are spring and autumn as temperatures are pleasant and humidity is lower. Storms are least common in autumn.
