The Tourist Attractions of Anchorage
Anchorage may be Alaska’s largest city, but when compared to most other state’s largest cities, Anchorage is really very small! This is part of the city’s appeal though and it’s very much a big city with a small town heart!
Established in 1914 Anchorage is also a very young city. It was formed as a port city for the Alaska Railroad and grew quickly. The arrival of air transport meant that Anchorage was far more accessible, and had another growth boom between the 1930’s and 1950’s, and when oil was discovered in 1968 yet another boom took place!
Anchorage is a beautiful and cosmopolitan city, and very picturesque; sitting on the coast, with the mountains in the background. The mountains present great opportunities for seeing wildlife, and if you rent a car, make your way up into the suburbs and you’re likely to see Moose, possibly even bears, eagles and dall sheep, and some great views!
Within the city there are two major attractions – Alaska Native Heritage Center and Anchorage Museum of History and Art.
Alaska Native Heritage Center
This is a popular attraction for anyone interested in Alaska’s native cultural history. It has exhibits on all of the native Alaskan cultures and features native dance performances and other shows. Outside, a lakeside trail takes visitors to different points where the lives of each Alaskan native culture are demonstrated.
Anchorage Museum of History and Art
The museum section of this attraction features a good exhibit on Alaskan history, whilst inside the art museum local artists are featured alongside temporary exhibits from the rest of the USA and around the world too.
Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
If you don’t fancy your chances of seeing Moose or bears out in the wild, you can visit the AWCC, 43 miles south of Anchorage. This is essentially a refuge for animals who have been orphaned, injured or are sick. Visitors can drive through the park in their own cars and should be able to see Moose, bears, bison, elk, eagles and more.
