Fairbanks is the second largest city in the US state of Alaska and it’s the largest in the interior of Alaska. In many respects this is a typical American city, but Fairbanks does have its share of culture and heritage if you’re looking for a more Alaskan experience.

Flights to Fairbanks

Five kilometres outside of Fairbanks is the Fairbanks International Airport (airport code: FAI). The airport recently built a new terminal and offers shuttles and public bus service into town. There are limited options for flights to Fairbanks from South Africa, usually with 2 transfers in the route. Major connection cities include Seattle, from which you can get a flight to Fairbanks with Alaskan Airlines, or via Minneapolis with Delta Airlines. Whichever way you come, the average flight to Fairbanks is about 25 to 30 hours long.

Fairbanks Tourist Attractions

Fairbanks sits on the banks of the River Chena and was established in 1901, and the city was named after a Republican senator, Charles Fairbanks. Despite being the second largest city in Alaska, Fairbanks is still only home to around 35,000 people so really it’s quite small. However, the city has everything a tourist should need on a day to day basis including large, national stores, as well as smaller locally run stores and services.

Creamer’s Field Migratory Wildlife Refuge

On the site of a former dairy that operated here until the huge flood of Fairbanks in 1967, Creamer’s field is now a wildlife refuge for migrating birds. It covers a huge area of 1800 acres that includes a number of different habitats, attracting many different bird species. There are forests, wetlands and fields here and the birds that come in their numbers include Canada Geese, ducks and cranes and the best time to see them is during the late summer migratory season when they begin to travel further south.

As well as the birds, the refuge includes a visitor centre and there are a number of trails here for visitors to explore on foot.

University of Alaska Fairbanks

The Fairbanks campus of the University of Alaska is home to several tourist attractions for the city. There is the Georgeson Botanical Garden that’s open over the summer months and shows visitors the plants that are native to Alaska and, through educational programs there’s an emphasis on sub-arctic horticulture.

The University of Alaska Museum of the North is an excellent museum to visit while in Fairbanks as it has many collections and exhibits dedicated to life in ‘the North’. It includes the nature, culture and history of the region and has a great exhibit on the Northern Lights, or better yet, see the real thing...

Aurora Borealis

Scientifically named Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are quite spectacular, and being so far north, Fairbanks is a great place to see them from. Though you might not want to visit Fairbanks in the winter, this is the best time to see the Northern Lights.

El Dorado Gold Mine

About 16 kilometres outside of Fairbanks is the El Dorado Gold Mine. The gold mine was founded in the early 1900s and was purchased much later to operate as a tourist attraction and today it’s open to tourists from May to September. The mine tour is really extensive, lasting a couple of hours and beginning on a train. You’ll find out how the miners mined for gold, and even get to try it yourself!

When Should You Visit Fairbanks?

Many of the tourist attractions are only open from May to September because outside of these months temperatures really drop. The warmest time to visit is August when the average high is 23C, while in January the average high is a freezing -18C!
