Destinations in Alaska
The US state of Alaska is situated in the far north west of North America and is separated from the contiguous United States by Canada. Alaska is the largest of all the 50 American states, but it’s also one of the most sparsely populated, with most inhabitants living in or near the cities.
Alaska welcomes international flights from the UK in the largest city, Anchorage (airport code: ANC). Flights to Alaska from the UK are indirect with one or two stops. Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines, KLM, United Airlines, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic Airways are among the airlines providing travellers with one stop flights to Alaska from London. Other airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France and Delta Air Lines offer flights to Alaska from the UK with two stops.
The Tourist Attractions of Alaska
Being separated from the contiguous United States, tourists should be aware that because of its relative remoteness, the cost of living in Alaska is a lot higher than in other US states. This means accommodation, eating and drinking out, shopping, and petrol will all cost more than might be expected, so you should budget extra for this. Don’t let this put you off though, as visiting Alaska is a once in a lifetime experience!
Alaska is popular for its spectacular scenery and wilderness. With a land area of 663,268 square miles and a population of less than 700,000 people, vast areas of Alaska are wilderness, where you can travel for days without any sign of civilization! The National Parks of Alaska are popular destinations…
Alaska’s National Parks
There are seven national parks in Alaska, a number beaten only by California, which has eight national parks. The only drawback with Alaska’s is that most of them are not very accessible! Only three of the eight can be accessed by road, making these three the most visited: Kenai Fjords, Denali and Wrangell-St Elias.
Denali National Park
At over 6 million acres, Denali has plenty of space for hiking, backpacking, camping and wildlife spotting and is best known for being the home of the USA’s (and the whole of North America) tallest mountain, Mount McKinley. The park is accessible by road from the George Parks Highway and motorists can drive 15 miles in. From that point the road is closed to public vehicles, but you can take tour buses.
Kenai Fjords National Park
The main feature, as the name suggests, of Kenai Fjords is the fjords which have been formed by ancient glaciers. Some glaciers still exist, and the whole park is stunningly beautiful.
Wrangell-St Elias National Park
The largest national park in Alaska, and indeed the whole of the United States is Wrangell-St Elias which is accessible by road from Anchorage. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve and features the second highest peak in the country, Mount St Elias. Camping in the backcountry and hiking are the most popular attractions.
Alaskan Cities
The largest city in Alaska is Anchorage. This cosmopolitan port city has a beautiful mountain backdrop as well as its own share of other spectacular scenery. Attractions include the Alaska Native Heritage Center and the Anchorage Museum of History and Art.
Juneau is the capital of Alaska, and unique in that it’s not accessible by road! The Mendenhall Glacier and Mount Roberts are the city’s main nearby attractions.
When Should You Visit Alaska?
Being such a large state tourists will find a certain amount of variety in the climate in Alaska. Summers can be warm but you should prepare for cool to cold weather. Winters can be quite cold here, so unless you’re prepared for sub zero temperatures you’d be better waiting until the summer
