The Tourist Attractions of Arizona
Best known for the Grand Canyon, this is what many visitors to Arizona come to see. But Arizona, although nicknamed the Grand Canyon State, actually has a lot more to offer than just this spectacular attraction. But first, the Grand Canyon!
The Grand Canyon
Protected as a National Park and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Grand Canyon is one of the world’s destinations that should be seen at least once by everybody!
You can’t really appreciate just how large this canyon is until you see it up close, and even then it’s difficult to judge the distances you’re looking at. Just the distance from the top of the canyon down to the Colorado River is over a mile, and the width of the canyon varies from between 4 to 18 miles wide. The South Rim is the more visited of the two, and features the Village where you’ll find accommodation, shops and a visitor centre. Visitors looking for the see through observation deck (called the Grand Canyon Skywalk) need to travel to the west, as it is not within the national park, but is located 120 miles outside of Las Vegas.
Other Arizona National Parks
Although not as well known as the Grand Canyon, Arizona also has two other national parks – Petrified Forest and Saguaro.
Saguaro is a desert environment, most famous for its cacti and is located west of the city of Tucson. Petrified Forest features the remains of ancient trees which have become petrified into minerals.
Other Natural Attractions in Arizona
The Glen Canyon Recreation Area is a popular destination. This large canyon became filled with water to make North America’s largest man made lake, called Lake Powell, and is popular for boat trips.
There’s also Monument Valley, with its very famous landscapes. This area is split between Arizona and neighbouring Utah and is a very desolate place.
Phoenix
Phoenix is the capital and largest city in Arizona. It is in fact the 5th largest city in the country as it’s experienced huge growth in the last few decades and has become a very popular place to live and visit. The climate is definitely one reason for this, and a high number of excellent golf courses is another!
Other cities in Arizona include Flagstaff, with its historic downtown; Mesa, founded by the Mormons; Tucson, the second largest city in Arizona; and Scottsdale, east of Phoenix.
When Should You Visit Arizona?
Arizona is famous for being hot, though it should be remembered that the state has quite a variety of elevations, so some parts will be cooler than others. The Grand Canyon, for example, although equally as spectacular in the winter, is a cold place because it’s at a high elevation. During the summer the canyon gets very hot though, especially down at river level.
As an average across the state, summers, from June to September can have temperatures in the range of 32 to 48C (90 to 120F). Spring and autumn are very pleasant, and in some destinations in the winter the temperatures are mild.
