Phoenix Tourist Attractions

With the influx of new residents and the rise in popularity as a tourism destination Phoenix is really benefiting in many ways. As more tourists come here and spend their money, more money goes back into the city, helping to improve it even more.

Art and Architecture

Downtown Phoenix has really benefited. Thanks to redevelopment and encouragement towards developing arts and culture in the area, it has really changed. There are several historic districts in downtown Phoenix and the Roosevelt Historic District is such that has benefited with the establishment of the First Friday Artwalk. On the first Friday of every month hundreds of art galleries open their doors to the public for free entry, allowing visitors to see many locally produced works of art which otherwise may not be on display.

Walking around downtown Phoenix you can enjoy some of the city’s other historic districts where the architecture changes from area to area. Some buildings are as old as Victorian, whereas others are more recent, dating from the mid 20th century.

Of particular interest is the historic Arizona Biltmore Hotel. This is in the Camelback East District of Phoenix and was built in 1921. What makes this hotel stand out is its unique list of guests, who have included Fred Astaire, Marilyn Monroe and Bob Hope.

Museums in Phoenix

Phoenix has a good selection of museums for visitors to enjoy. The Arizona Science Center combines science and learning with over 350 fixed exhibits on display, and an IMAX cinema, whilst the Heard Museum is based on Native American cultures and arts. The Wrigley Mansion is both a mansion and a museum and was built by the famous chewing gum manufacturer. Finally the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park is a popular visitor attraction, concentrating on the pre-Columbian civilisation who lived in this area, called the Hohokam.

Parks and Peaks of Phoenix

Phoenix Mountains Park is one of the city’s popular parks. Situated within the city, this park includes Piestewa Peak which stands at a height of 2,610 feet and gives great views of the city and surrounding area to those who hike to the top.

When Should You Visit Phoenix?

With its desert location Phoenix has an arid climate and is renowned for being very hot in the summer ad mild in the winter.

Summers are long, hot and dry and may be a little too much for some visitors – the average high in July is 42C (107F), and nighttimes don’t give much relief from the heat as the lows average at 28C (83F). December and January are the coolest months and though pleasant for walking around during the day, the evenings can get a little cool.
