Destinations in Arizona
Right in the south of the state of Arizona is the city of Tucson. Pronounced Too-son, Tucson is the second largest city in Arizona and has many interesting and varied attractions for tourists.
Flights to Tucson
Tucson International Airport (airport code: TUS) is a very busy airport, and it’s located 6 miles outside of downtown Tucson. There is a public bus service into the city, along with the usual taxis and hotel shuttles. From the UK, Continental Airlines and British Airways both have a 1-stop flight to Tucson, with a connection in Denver. A flight with United Airlines will travel via New York as well as Denver, while Air Canada flights to Tucson make a stop in Toronto and Denver. Depending on connection times, flights take anywhere between 13 and 18 hours.
Tucson Tourist Attractions
Surrounded by mountains and deserts, Tucson has the classic kind of landscapes that tourists expect to see when visiting Arizona. You can get out and enjoy the scenery within the Saguaro National Park, or experience some of the history and culture of Tucson in the city centre.
Saguaro National Park
Split by the city of Tucson into Saguaro East and Saguaro West, this national park gives visitors the chance to see a very typical desert environment. The park is home to the Saguaro Cactus, and although the landscapes are similar in both, there are slightly different visitor attractions within the two sections of the park. In Saguaro East there is a fee for vehicle entry, but none in the West, while hiking and driving trails can be found in both.
Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
If you’re not a museum fan, don’t let the name of this attraction in Tucson put you off visiting. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is really far more like a zoo, featuring many species of animals from the local region as well as some from further afield. There are very natural enclosures which are great for the animals, and they give visitors the chance to see exactly the kinds of habitats the animals actually live in. There are some museum type exhibits here too, and the facility is also a botanical garden.
Pima Air and Space Museum
More like what you would expect from a museum is the Pima Air and Space Museum. This is one of the largest aerospace museums in the world with over 250 different aircraft on display, both indoors and out. The guided walking tours are a great way to see the highlights of this Tucson museum.
Kartchner Caverns State Park
There’s great scenery above ground in Tucson, but venturing underground is also an experience not to be missed! The Kartchner Caverns are impressive limestone caverns that have a show cave and 2.4 miles of passages. Tours are guided and there are several different areas that you can see.
Old Tucson Studios
If you’ve ever been a fan of Westerns then you’ll enjoy a visit to the Old Tucson Studios! This is a movie studio originally built for the 1939 movie, Arizona, but has been used for numerous others since. It’s open to the public for tours.
When Should You Visit Tucson?
With very hot temperatures and monsoon rains summer is not the best time to visit Tucson. July and August are by far the wettest months and suffer severe thunderstorms with average highs in the high 30’s C. Spring is drier yet still hot, so April and May could be good months to visit.
