The city of Fort Smith is the second largest in the US state of Arkansas and it’s situated right in the west of the state on the border with Oklahoma. Fort Smith is an historic town that was founded in 1817 and has recently become even more popular with tourists thanks to Hollywood!
Flights to Fort Smith
Only a few airlines have flights to Fort Smith Regional Airport (airport code: FSM) but they do offer some reliable options. From the UK you can catch a fight to Fort Smith with Delta Airlines and KLM, both have a 2-stop route that goes through Atlanta and Memphis, or Virgin Atlantic will take you via New York City and Memphis. The airport is only 3 miles outside of the city. The flight to Fort Smith will take approximately 17 hours, including layovers.
Fort Smith Tourist Attractions
Fort Smith is best known as a destination with many historical attractions, and ahs recently become a more popular tourist attraction following the successful 2010 movie ‘True Grit’ which was set mainly in the historic town of Fort Smith in the 1870s.
Fort Smith National Historic Site
The major attraction for the city is the Fort Smith National Historic Site which covers several different buildings. Some of these have been reconstructed, while some are still in their original states. This includes the original foundations of the first Fort Smith, built in 1817. The replica set of gallows is a popular attraction here, despite its gruesome past, and these are like the ones used by the ‘hanging judge’ Isaac Parker. A trail also winds around the site and commemorates the Trail of Tears, an event when 5 Native American tribes were forcibly removed from the US.
Belle Grove Historic District
If you enjoy history and historical architecture the Belle Grove Historic District should be on your agenda when visiting Fort Smith. The district covers 22 square blocks, so it’s a fairly large area and includes around 20 restored homes. Guided walking tours are popular, or you can just see the neighbourhood on your own.
Fort Smith Museum of History
You can explore the local history in more detail at the Fort Smith Museum of History which not only has displays on the city, but on Arkansas as a whole. There is quite a selection of items and artefacts on display here, making this an interesting visit.
Miss Laura’s Social Club
Miss Laura’s Social Club is quite a unique attraction in Fort Smith. It’s the only former brothel to be registered on the US National Register of Historic Places and has even been restored so that visitors can see what this building was like when used as a brothel! This was during a time when prostitution was legal, so life really was different for everyone involved.

Fort Smith usually has mild to cool winters with a small amount of snowfall common in January and February. By April temperatures are already heating up with an average high around 23C and by July and August it’s hot and humid. The average high in these months is around 34C.
