Situated in the Southern United States is the state of Arkansas. Though not usually top of the list for international visitors to the USA, Arkansas is actually a very attractive state with picturesque mountains and friendly cities.

International flights to Arkansas are welcomed in two major airports: Little Rock National Airport (airport code: LIT) and Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (airport code: XNA) in Bentonville, which is located 178 miles from the capital, Little Rock. The following airlines provide flights to Arkansas from the UK with one connection: Northwest Airlines, KLM, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Air France, British Airways, Air France, and Virgin Atlantic Airways.

The Tourist Attractions of Arkansas

The pronunciation of Arkansas is something which sometimes confuses visitors to the state! Because there is a state called Kansas, which is pronounced with all the letters, it’s easy to think that Arkansas is pronounced the same way. In fact the pronunciation of the state was settled by two senators who argued over what it should be in 1881. Eventually it was decided that it should be pronounced with a silent ‘s’, hence ‘ar-kan-saw’!

Little Rock

Little Rock is the capital and largest city in Arkansas, attracting visitors with its historical buildings and neighbourhoods. The original state capitol building is amongst the attractions, now called the Old State House, plus there is the current State Capitol Building to see too. This was built in 1919 and modeled on the US Capitol in Washington DC.

The historical residential districts of Little Rock are nice for a stroll around, to admire the old Southern architecture, and the Historical Arkansas Museum will tell you more about the city and the state. Other museums of interest include the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum, and the Museum of Discovery.

Although Little Rock is a popular place to visit, many people come to Arkansas to enjoy the great outdoors. There are many natural attractions to the state, hence the state nickname ‘The Natural State’! Here are just a few of the most popular areas…

The Ozarks

The Ozarks mountain range is in the north western end of Arkansas and contains, amongst other things, the state’s highest point, Mount Magazine. The whole of the Ozarks region is popular for hiking, camping and other outdoor activities. In the Buffalo National River area you can enjoy the scenery, the river and an array of historical and cultural attractions, plus over 300 caves!

Situated within the Ozarks you will also find the town of Eureka Springs. The town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features quaint Victorian cottages and narrow streets, resembling something right out of an old English village!

Hot Springs National Park

In Central Arkansas is the Hot Springs National Park and the town of Hot Springs. As the name suggests, the town was established after the discovery of hot springs here, and grew when it became a popular place to come and be cured of various ailments (as was believed back then!). Several bathhouses were built for the visitors, and you can tour some of the ones which are still standing to this day. The town also has its own historical buildings to see and the rest of the national park and surroundings has scenic drives to enjoy too.

When Should You Visit Arkansas?

Typical of the Southern United States, Arkansas has a humid subtropical climate which gives the state long, hot and humid summers, and relatively mild winters. During the autumn you can enjoy the ‘fall colours’, and in the spring the temperature is very pleasant, though be advised that this is tornado season.
